Thelma Elizabeth Forrest Bunting Obituary
POQUOSON - Thelma Elizabeth Forrest Bunting, 102, passed away Friday, December 28, 2012. A native and lifelong resident of Poquoson, VA, she was the first child of Cleveland Forrest and his wife, Janey, born Wednesday, April 27, 1910. After attending Poquoson High School, she married another Poquoson native, Joseph Otis Bunting, co-owner and captain of the P.K. Hunt. A homemaker until his death, she then enrolled in business courses that landed her a position in 1955 at the Langley Aeronautical Laboratory of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics; later NASA's Langley Research Center. There she performed mathematical calculations in support of the Mercury, Apollo and Voyager programs until her retirement in 1972. "Miss Thelma" was a lifelong, and the oldest, member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Poquoson, active in the Ladies Bible Class and the Ella Forrest Circle. With the Trinity Fundraisers, she volunteered her quilting skills to support the church's building program. She was also member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed knitting, especially sweaters for her family. And those who knew her will recall she was a voracious reader, often consuming five books a week. Mrs. Bunting was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, as well as by sisters Hilda Forrest Menetch and Beulah Forrest Nottingham Ward. She is survived by another sister, Theresa Forrest Kenis of Sanford, FL; by her son, Col. Joseph O. Bunting, Jr. (USAF, Ret.) of Alexandria, and his wife Catherine; and by her daughter, Judy Bunting Sharman of Poquoson. She also leaves behind five adoring grandchildren, ten loving great-grandchildren and many wonderful nieces and nephews, along with their families. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church by Pastor Charles Stacy and Rev. Milford Rollins, with interment to follow at Parklawn Memorial Park in Hampton. The family will receive visitors 4-6:30 PM Wednesday at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home in Poquoson. Memorial contributions may be made to Poquoson Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 2099; and to Poquoson Pubic Library, 500 City Hall Ave.; both in Poquoson, VA 23662. Online condolences to www.claytorrollins.com .
