Walter S. Long Jr. Obituary
POQUOSON - Walter S. Long Jr., 85, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family and loved ones on April 22, 2015. Walter proudly served in Korea and Vietnam during his enlistment in the United States Navy and the United States Air Force. He was honorably discharged in 1975 after 27 years of meritorious service. Walt then pursued a career as a Nuclear Inspector and Instructor at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1993. From retirement to passing, his love of science led him to volunteer as a docent at the Virginia Air and Space Center where he took great pleasure in educating young students about space exploration and the many facets of NASA's research contributions. In addition, he always looked forward to judging science fairs and Odyssey of the Mind competitions for local schools. Walt is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Terry; son, Walter Long III & Charlotte of Newport News; daughters, Shirley Martin & Buster Jr of Poquoson, and Melanie Lawhorne & Barry of Poquoson; grandson, Jacob Martin & Alicia; granddaughters, Jennifer Martin-Klochak, Jessica Martin-Ocasio & Randy, Virginia Long, Tara Long, and Taylor Lawhorne; great-granddaughters, Natalie Klochak, Anabelle Ocasio, and Ruby Martin; sisters, Dorothy Furgione & Victor, Kay Mento & Sam; and brother David Long & Gail. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Angeline and Walter S. Long Sr., and sisters, Shirley J. Long and Virginia R. Georgen. The family would like to express their heartfelt thank you and appreciation to the Poquoson Fire and Rescue Department, Riverside Regional Medical Center Hospice, Dr. Tammy Beavers, and Edouline Shirley Reyes for the compassion, care, and services provided during his illness. For the others, too many to name, thank you for your support in our time of need. Visitation will be held Friday, April 24th, 10-11:00 AM, immediately followed by his funeral service at 11:00 AM, all at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home in Poquoson. The burial, with full military honors, will follow at 1:00 pm at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Poquoson Fire and Rescue Squad, or the Virginia Air and Space Center, Hampton. Online condolences to claytorrollins.com .
