Wayne Douglas Green Obituary
Wayne Douglas Green, 76, entered into eternal rest with his Savior and Lord on August 7, 2018. He was born to Ollie Herman Green and Florence Elizabeth Sydnor Green on April 1, 1942, in their home in Mecklenburg County (Chase City) Va. Two years later he moved with his family to Hampton. He attended Armstrong Elementary School, George Wythe Junior High School, and graduated from Hampton High School, Class of 1960. He ran cross country, track and played French horn in the marching and concert bands. Wayne was employed at Newport News Shipbuilding (Huntington Ingalls Industries) from June 1961 to February 2012 as a Calibration Specialist in Quality Control, attaining the position of Master Shipbuilder. He served in the Army National Guard for six years (May 1960 – May 1966), attaining the rank of Sergeant E-5, as part of the Svc Btry 5th How Bn (105T), 111th Field Artillery, in the National Guard Armory in Hampton. At the age of 11, he accepted Jesus as his personal Savior and was baptized into the membership of Memorial Baptist Church, serving the Lord as Sunday School Director and teacher, a Deacon, and on many committees. He also coached the church's softball team. Through the years many shared with the family that Wayne was such a blessing in their lives and were endeared to them because "If you needed anything done, without question, he was always there to help!" Preceding him in death were his parents and his twin infant sons, Scott Herman and Ashley Purcell. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife Kathie Strayer Green, his sons: Chad Green (Jamie) and Heath Green (Michele), and his daughter Jill Green Teel (David). Also his precious grandchildren: Haven and Cohen Green, Bryant and Brayden Green, and Laura Teel. His brother, Ronald (Ronnie) S. Green (Sandy), sisters-in law: Donna Powell, Patty Brown, and Pam Wood (Ralph), and many loved nieces and nephews. He faithfully supported his grandchildren's activities just as he had done for his children's. They brought so much joy into his life. Family and friends visitation is at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton, on Wednesday, August 15, from 5:30-7:00 p.m. A celebration of his life will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 16, at Memorial Baptist Church, 324 Newport News Ave, Hampton. He asked that this be included as food for thought: Laura's "School Rules": (1) Do your best; (2) Respect your teacher; and (3) Be kind to your friends! This will do all in good stead for life. "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths." Proverbs 3:5, 6 In Wayne's memory, we desire memorial contributions be given to Memorial Baptist Church General Fund, 317 Lee Street, Hampton, Va. 23669. The family expresses their appreciation for the loving support Heartland Hospice Care provided Wayne in recent weeks.
