William C. DICKENS Obituary
POQUOSON - William Campbell Dickens, 92, of Poquoson, Va., passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on March 23, 2012.
A native of Roxboro, N.C., he served during WW II in France, Germany, and Austria, with the 101st Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron Mechanized. While in the Army, he earned the EAME Service Medal with two Bronze Stars. After WW II, he moved to Richmond, Va., and worked in the tobacco industry, retiring as a buyer with Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co. He lived there for 49 years prior to retiring to Poquoson with his beloved wife of 51 years, Margaret June Rush Dickens, who preceded him in death in 1999. He loved his family, golfing with friends, fishing, his 101st Recon Reunions, vegetable gardening, and riding his genuine John Deere tractor.
He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Richard; his father, Stephen James Dickens Sr.; mother, Lula Judith Lewis Dickens; brother, Stephen James Dickens Jr.; sisters, Louise Jordan Dickens Lankford Kunkle, Mary Lewis Dickens, and Lillian Lewis Baird.
He is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Lewis Dickens Talbert and her husband, James M. Talbert of Poquoson, Va., and Margaret Allison Dickens Byrd and her husband, J. Abbott Byrd III of Virginia Beach, Va.; four grandchildren, Lindsay Rush Fournier, Jennifer Marie Byrd and William Abbott Byrd, all of Richmond, Va., and Catherine Allison Byrd of Washington, D.C.
A celebration of Bill's life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 26, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Concord United Methodist Church, 70 Concord Church Rd., Roxboro, N.C.
