NEWPORT NEWS - Richard W. Taylor Sr., 83, passed away with his loving family by his side, Thursday, April 12, 2012, in Newport News.
Richard was born in Wachapreague, Va., to the late R. A. C. and Grace Wyatt Taylor and was a native of Onancock, Va.
Mr. Taylor was a longtime member of North Riverside Baptist Church, where he served as Church Clerk for 23 years and as Deacon and Deacon Chairman for several terms. He was a member of the Bridgebuilders Sunday School Class. He was a retired Bell Atlantic supervisor. He was a member of Peninsula Telecom Pioneers and past president of their Life Member Club. He was a member of and Accredited Visitor of Peninsula Chapter 119 Mended Hearts and served two terms as their president. He was a longtime volunteer at Riverside Regional Medical Center. He was also a member of Warwick Masonic Lodge #336 A. F. & A. M. He also served in the Virginia National Guard for 18 years.
A loving caring and devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother he will be greatly missed.
A resident of Newport News for 45 years, he is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Saunders Taylor; a son, Richard W. Taylor Jr., and his wife, Denise, of Newport News; a daughter, Anita T. Chastain and her husband, Ken, of Alexandria; two grandsons, who were the joy of his life, Nicholas W. Taylor, of Wake Forest, N.C., and Cameron J. Taylor, of Norfolk, Va.; and a sister, Carolyn W. Taylor, of Salisbury, Md.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at Peninsula Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 16, at North Riverside Baptist Church with the Rev. Seth Horrell officiating. Following interment in Peninsula Memorial Park, a reception to celebrate the life of Richard Taylor will be held at North Riverside Baptist Church.
The family wishes to thank Riverside Hospice and The Chesapeake's healthcare for the love they showed and the care they provided over the past two weeks.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mended Hearts Chapter 119, 2622 Marrow Drive, Newport News, VA 23606 or the North Riverside Baptist Church building fund.
