Margaret GOURLEY Obituary

HAMPTON - Margaret Gourley, 89, of Hampton, passed away peacefully Nov. 11, 2012. With her family by her side she drifted off to be with the Lord and her beloved husband of 67 years, the late Robert S. Gourley.
Margaret was born in Stanford, N.C., on March 15, 1923, and had made Hampton her home for the past 62 years. She lived a very active and full life. Margaret took pride in her work for 7-Eleven Stores, where she was employed, up until a year ago, for more than 30 years. She delighted in being known affectionately as "Grandma" to her customers. Margaret was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and was instrumental in the establishment and beautification of the church grounds. She later enjoyed helping with the food pantry and felt "nobody should go without food." This was reflected in her love of cooking and the enjoyment she received from sharing with family and friends. Her other love was gardening, which was evident in her many "Yard of the Month" awards she received over the years.
Margaret was preceded in death by her grandson, Bobby Yarborough; one great-grandson, Matthew Westfall; one great great-granddaughter, Savannah Philpott; and one son-in-law, Henry Rowe.
She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Joann and Milton Garrison of Hampton, Carolyn and Ted Yarborough of Newport News, Jean and George Bockman of Palmyra, Norma and Wayne Boyd, Sue and Jerry Sprouse, and Betty and Glen Morris, all of Hampton; 12 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and two great great-grandchildren.
The family extends a heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Travis Edwards and staff for the compassionate care they provided to their parents. Also, the family wishes to thank her caring neighbors and special friends, Emma, John, and Nancy.
The family would appreciate any expressions of sympathy to take the form of contributions to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 2150 Cunningham Drive, Hampton, VA 23666.
In keeping with her wishes, a private service will be at a later date. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Sorry for the loss of your Mom and I was sorry to hear about your Dad. They stayed at Liberty Hall for many years and I was quite fond of them. I remember when the beloved black cat was lost here and several days later there he was sitting on the picnic table. I called your mom and she was so happy!!!

To all the Girls, especially Jamice,

Growing up I had no idea that Grandma was not my real grandmother, I know you all remember why I called her that and was so happy to have a grandmother in her. Thanks Jamice for sharing your grandma with me it meant so much to me growing up to have someone to call grandma.
I will miss seeing her at church when she would come and surprise us.
I will never forget her. May peace be with he now and with all of you forever.

To the Family of Mrs Gourley - I am distressed this morning to see that you have lost your Mom - I knew Mrs Gourley for many years thru the Taylor Farm family. I tried to call her several times these past few years but never could reach her - in 2007 I moved to Louisiana to be near my son - I am so sorry for your loss - she was a wonderful person and so was your Dad - the Taylor family loved them so much. May God be with you at this most difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with you as well.
