Dr.  Burton D. Cardwell Obituary
WILLIAMSBURG - Dr. Burton D. Cardwell, 78, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away, surrounded by his family, on October 17, 2013. During his career, Dr. Cardwell held various positions with the State of Michigan Department of Agriculture including coordinator of the department's Toxic Substances and Emergency programs. He retired as Chief Deputy Director of Agriculture in 1995. Born in Chicago, IL, Burton was the son of James Meredith Cardwell and Eula Mae Richardson Cardwell. He attended Michigan State University where he received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees. He also met and, on January 31, 1960, married his college sweetheart and the love of his life, Sharon F. Wilson. Dr. Cardwell continued his education at South Dakota State University, where he earned his PhD in Biochemistry. Dr. Cardwell was widely regarded for his selfless service to Michigan through his work in the state and national government and as part of MSU's agriculture research and Extension education programs. In 1995, Michigan State University honored him as one of their Distinguished Alumni for his contributions to agriculture and agribusiness in Michigan. Dr. Cardwell served on several national committees including National Animal Damage Control and National Wildlife Services. He also held a patent for cancer research. Dr. Cardwell was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity for over 57 years. He was on the charter line of Delta Pi at Michigan State and subsequently led as the first Polemarch of the Chapter. He was also a member of Sigma Phi Pi Fraternity, Epsilon Delta Chapter in Williamsburg, Virginia. Burton enjoyed many hobbies including his favorites, sailing, traveling, photography and reading mysteries. He also enjoyed "gaming" with his wonderful friends. Burton enjoyed being with family and loved his grandchildren, who affectionately called him Bumpa. He truly enjoyed life and lived his to the fullest. He was admired, respected and loved by his family and all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sharon W. Cardwell; children, Burton D. Cardwell (Jennifer), Brooke C. Franklin (Terrence) and Brigette C. Johnson (Christopher); nine grandchildren and one great grandchild; sister, Kay L. Fulton; sisters-in-law, Suzanne Holland, Jaqueline Holland, and Joanne Holland; brother-in-law, Damon Holland; and a host of nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life service officiated by Reverend Rex Ellis will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at Hogg Funeral Home, 3098 George Washington Memorial Highway, Hayes, VA 23072. Inurnment will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Williamsburg, VA.
