Terry Snyder Obituary
NEWPORT NEWS - Terry Snyder died on September 7, 2015. Born in Newport News, Va. on October 23, 1948, Terry was one of those rare individuals who knew instantly what he wanted to be when he grew up - a professional puppeteer. After graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Commercial Art, Terry worked as an illustrator and art director, before beginning his long career as a puppeteer. Designing and building his own puppets, costumes and sets, and writing or adapting his own scripts, Terry toured his shows to schools, museums, libraries and other venues, primarily up and down the east coast. He was awarded a Citation of Excellence from the Union Internationale de la Marionette and was a recipient of the President's Award from the Puppeteers of America, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the Art of Puppetry. Terry was an accomplished flutist and also loved to sing. Over the years he added his baritone to several choirs. He also appeared on stage in theatrical productions in the Richmond area. With declining health, Terry reluctantly left behind the rigorous life of a performing puppeteer, but continued to design and build puppets for others. He also designed costumes for various theatre companies. Terry's indomitable will to live carried him through years of health crises, including a liver transplant, kidney transplant, cancer, seizure disorder, heart valve replacements and installation of a pacemaker, just to name a few. However, after exhausting all options for care of his congestive heart failure, Terry and his wife, Linda, made the decision to bring him home to live out his final days in peace - among familiar surroundings, with his beloved dog and tolerated cat, and visits from family and friends. Terry was preceded in death by his parents, Nancy and Roy, his brother, Jon, and his step-father, Raymond Lemaire. He leaves behind his wife of 33 years, Linda, sister Shirwin Moore (Herman), brothers Leslie Snyder and Michael Lemaire (Meg), sister-in-law, Ava Snyder, several nieces, nephews and great nieces/nephews, and cherished friends who have enriched his life beyond measure. In lieu of flowers, please consider performing an unexpected act of kindness for a stranger. There will be a Memorial Celebration of Terry's remarkable life at a place and time yet to be determined.
