Sister Marian José Smith, 96, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012 at Morristown Medical Center, Morristown, NJ.

The wake for Sister Marian José will be held in Holy Family Chapel at the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth Motherhouse, Convent Station, NJ from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on October 7, 2012 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 6 p.m. Burial will be on Monday, October 8, 2012 in Holy Family Cemetery, Convent Station at 10 a.m. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of William R. Dangler Funeral Home of Summit.

Sister Marian José was born in Hoboken, NJ, the daughter of George W. and Henrietta (Taylor) Smith. She entered the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1945, and was a member for 67 years. She graduated from the College of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ with a B.A. degree in Chemistry, and from Fordham University, Bronx, NY with an MS degree in Physical Chemistry and a PhD degree in Biochemistry. Sister Marian José was an educator in the State of New Jersey. She served as a teacher in Immaculate Conception High School, Montclair from 1946 to 1948 and as an instructor of Chemistry and Coordinator of the Chemistry Department at the College of Saint Elizabeth from 1948 to 1975. She also served as a Councilor and Assistant Provincial in the Western Province of the Sisters of Charity from 1973 to 1976. Following this she served as Chairman of the Chemistry Department and then as Professor of Chemistry at the College of Saint Elizabeth until 2003. Sister Marian José continued research in Chemistry until 2012. She was Chair of the North Jersey section of the American Chemical Society in 1982. From 1988 to 2012 Sister Marian José led the Sister Miriam Teresa League of Prayer and was responsible for continuing to move forward the Cause for the Canonization of Sister Miriam Teresa Demjanovich of the Sisters of Charity.

She is survived by the Sisters of Charity; her sister, Henrietta M. Turner of Long Valley, NJ; many nieces and nephews; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
