Bill Brown Obituary

Bill Brown

AGE: 69 • Lake Hopatcong

Bill passed away after a long illness. Born in Lawrenceville, Georgia, Bill landed his first radio job at the age of 15 at WCLB in Camilla, GA. He then headed to California and was on the air at KICO, KAMP and KXO. He joined the Navy and served in Tokyo from 1960 - 1964. He was a photographer upon enlistment and worked on Project Mercury, photographing aspects of the capsule chute development program. He was also the Program Director and disc jockey on the Far East (Radio) Network/Tokyo. When he returned to the States in 1964, he was hired by KGB Radio in San Diego, the #1 station in that market, a Drake-Chenault "Boss Radio" Top 40 format. In 1967 Bill left San Diego for a job at another Drake-Chenault radio station in Cincinnati, and, as he was driving across the country, he received a call from his boss to continue driving on to New York, where he joined WOR/FM. Two years later he was hired by WCBS/FM, where he was on the air for 36 years, retiring in 2005. He was best known for his "Brown Bag" special which aired during the lunch hour every day. Bill was a 32-year resident of Lake Hopatcong, NJ, where he enjoyed boating and golf and loved every sunset he saw from his front window.

He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Debbie (Meehan) Brown of Lake Hopatcong; his son, Bill Brown; daughter-in-law Rosario (Castellon) Brown, and two beautiful granddaughters, Emilia and Camila, all residing in California. Bill took great pride in his son's accomplishments as a composer/film scorer (CSI:NY among his many credits).

Bill will be missed by family members on the East and West Coasts and by a very special community of friends in Lake Hopatcong.

Contributions in his memory may be made to St. Peter's Orphanage, a residential treatment facility for deprived and abandoned adolescent boys, 170 Diamond Spring Road, Denville, NJ 07834. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Tuttle Funeral Home, Randolph, NJ (www.tuttlefh.com).

How great for these reminders of our beloved Bill Brown and how great to see people still putting up their memories and comments. I can still hear that calm kind and humorous voice come across the airwaves and his knowledge of music was off the charts and he did it without any big show off fanfare - another thing that made him so great. "Hey Bill if I get up there, going to have one great Brown Bag for you to play". Miss you dear radio personality and God rest your beautiful soul

Bill Brown will be one of the most remembered, and loved, air personalities of my lifetime. From WOR-FM to WCBS-FM, I've enjoyed listening to Bill. He was a pleasure to listen to on the air, and an ultimate professional. I had the pleasure to sit in with him on several occasions, and had long chats with him when walking to the Port Authority for our buses. To watch Bill mix & segway two songs was a true art. Bill listened to the musical notes & words of each segway. I carried that to my own radio shows. And I can't forget the Brown Bag! The listener always provides the best suggestions! RIP Bill.

Once again I would like to give homage to the memory of a giant, one of those who really touched those who lent an ear to the Brown Bagger, MR. B, on the afternoon drive. As our time go's forward we carry fond and loving memories of those we felt sincerely close to and have passed. Every so often to reflect back to voice of the Giant and the listening pleasure he gave us where we would transcend in our own euphoria. Words, words, words, are never enough to express devotion and sincerity. But one thing I can surely bet on are the Sincerity and affection of this Giants Fan's. Every time I spin Bobby Darin's vinyl I am back on 101's afternoon drive and take me back to a great time. R.I.P. Bill I'll be seeing you. Oh the angels have to be loving you.

I had my ear always close to the magic box where you were taken in time to a place of comfortable repose. The radio giant that took you on this journey was commander of the vernacular. The voice that commanded the attention of your being. I meet this gentleman at the Cove where I was spinning 50s,60s vinyl on a Saturday nite. Jimmy the mixologist introduced us. Bill this is Mr. Bill Brown. This nite was a very special gig for me to say the very least. I always would listen to him do the afternoon drive and I have to mention Ron Lundy when he would introduce the giant. Bill sent out over the air waves a dedication of the late great Mr. Bobby Darin's Artificial Flowers and he had it taped! what a MAN! Its been many years ago but we are still able to reflect back to a time to the magic box that brought us what we enjoyed and held close to our memories. You live on Brown Bagger in heaven and may family and fans endure with love for a GIANT!

I was just reading some of the most recent entries to Bill's guest book and its evident how much Bill was loved by co workers and listeners. One entry was from Philip Martone who mentioned two of his selections were used for Bill's "Brown Bag" and I smiled to myself because the same thing happened to me. Now I'm trying to remember what my "theme" was for both of them. Am sure they were good because Bill was selective in the kindest way.
Oh how I miss those radio days and wish we'd return to radio that was entertaining in all the right ways and with professionals behind the mike, playing music that was and always will be "great to listen to" no matter how many years pass. Thank you Patricia Brown-Abare for keeping this book open for all who loved Bill Brown.

A big fan of Bill's since his WOR-FM days, I once hired him to do some voiceover work for a client in west Jersey. He was, of course, warm, friendly and ultra-professional. The client, who wasn't familiar with his work, kept saying, 'you were right, his voice is like velvet thunder (that's how I described Bill's voice).
A few months later, my second son was born, and I called Bill at the station and asked him to play a song for my son. I can still get chills hearing 'velvet thunder' cue up 'Rock Your Baby' by George McRae and say, 'welcome to the world, Michael Vespe'.

I was Bill and Debbie's bus driver for years. Bill sat up front by me one day and told me I had a good voice for radio and I should get into it. I wasn't interested untill Bill dedicated a song to me by Eddie rabbit. Driving my life away. He hit home and I was hooked. I went to the studio with Bill many times and he taught me what he could. I went to school the next thing I knew I was on the air. Bill was and always will be my mentor. We lived a 1/4 a mile from each other. Debbie was his rock and he was hers, true soul mates. Bills son Billy was his pride and joy. my wife Joanne and I will miss him. Love to the family; John and Joanne Voorhees

Bill always had a kind word and interesting conversation. He was always engaging, loving to talk. I cherished all the family get-togethers at Debbie & Bill's house with him showing off the things he loved: the lake, the boat, the view. When I lived in NY, Bill invited me to the studio, gave me a tour and introduced me around. I was so impressed & excited. I will truly miss him and I offer my deepest condolences to Debbie, Billy & Rosario, and all the family.

I always listened to CBS-FM in the 70s and missed it after moving out of the area. Bill was always great to listen to. 1976 was my first college radio show--oldies. No surprise. Still have my old CBS-FM Golden Key Card. Always listened when I visited the area and kept up on the station's news online. So sorry to hear of Bill's passing at too young an age. Good day, goodbye!

I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Brown about 23 years ago, simply by chance, in the Rockaway Town Square Mall. I'd gotten down on one knee to tie my then 2-year-old's shoe and felt a tap on my shoulder. Mr. Brown asked where I'd gotten my WCBS-FM jacket, I told him my daughter had given it me as a birthday present, and he lamented that even those at the station didn't have one of them....A true gentleman, a brilliant radio personality, and simply a nice person. I will keep Mr. Brown and his family in my prayers.

My condolances to the brown family. Some of the best days of my life have been with my family cruising lk hopatcong, swimming, fishing, in our sea ray and later our boston whaler named "Hello Luv". We always had WCBS-FM on and listened to the best DJ's that ever lived. Harry, Ron, Bill, and Bob. I never knew Bill and his family lived on Lk Hopatcong. It's very sad that Bill has passed on, but what wonderful memories his family will have from living on the Lake. May God bless Bill and his family.

Funny thing but the listeners knew our DJ's whether we met them or not and we knew that Bill had to be as kind "off the air" as he was "on the air." It has to be the light that God places inside people and in Bill's case, God put some kind of flame! Thanks Bill for the years of great radio which was put together with these few things; a real decent man, with real talent, and a love for his profession and loyal listeners. Thanks too for selecting my "Brown Bag" entry and for making me feel liked I walked on air for weeks afterwards. If I get to heaven one day, will look for you. My entry is questionable but not yours - you're up there for sure!

To The Brown Family My Condolences

When I heard Bob Shannon broadcast a Tribute to Bill Brown today, about His Brown Bag and was very shocked to hear about his passing! Bill was a Great D J to hear during his afternoon shows and was followed by Bob Shannon at 3 PM. When WCBS went off the Air, I was always concerned about Bill. Bill always made it to work during all inclement weather conditions safely. I had always remembered he would always follow Ron Lundy at Noon & Ron would Salute him when he would enter the studio. So sorry to hear of your loved one's passing. Though I didn't know him personally I am one of the many people who he kept company during the afternoon hours. How I missed that when WCBS FM changed formats. And though the radio station eventually gave us back disc jockeys to go along with the music, Bill Brown was not part of that group and so the new CBS FM could never be as great as the original.
And now that he is brightening up heaven's afternoons, may his family and friends find comfort in the memories he left behind.

I am so sad, Bill was so sweet to me, the first time I met him I wanted to know if he was Dan Ingram, He laughed NO Darling, but you made my day, He had a wonderful voice and at time I would call him and he always knew it was me. I remember his last words on wcbsfm, as the format changed, I think it was a hint as it was over, I always wondered where he was and how he was. I used to send in Brown bag songs when listeners could. I was even picked and still have the bag he sent me. I still use it too. I will miss my Radio Friend, but now he is in Peace with God, sending Love and condolence to his family, friends and fans we all loved Bill!!! I remember Bill from his earliest days in NY radio. We'd spoken of a number of similar experiences from our individual backgrounds in phone conversations throughout many years, in addition to various other topics. He was always engaging and enjoyable to chat with. An interesting sidelight is that radio stations often changed the on-air names the jocks used, but Bill was one of the rare few who fit right in; a real "natural" in that way and in his great persona. I am sorry to learn of his passing and wish him a safe journey to a wonderful place. My regrets also to his family and many friends on the loss of this fine man.

I grew up listening to Bill Brown on WOR-FM and CBS-FM. He was a wonderful disc jockey, always upbeat, with a very friendly personality. He was always a pleasure to listen to and one of my wonderful memories of FM rock radio in its early days and the timeless oldies format. Somewhere in my files I have an autographed photo of Bill I think my father, who was in the advertising business, got for me. I'm going to look for that today! My thoughts and prayers are with Bill's family and I want them to know that he made a great many millions of radio listeners happy over the years.
