Merrill S. Hess

AGE: 84 • Morristown

Merrill S. Hess of Morristown, NJ and Southampton, Bermuda, died peacefully and surrounded by his family on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012. He was 84. Merrill was born in Orange Memorial Hospital and attended Lincoln Grammar School and Summit High School. He graduated from Williston Academy in Easthampton, MA in August 1945 and attended Yale University before joining the U.S. Navy in which he served as a medical corpsman during the Korean Conflict. He began a career in baseball in 1953, subsequently moving to Pittsburgh where he was a resident of the Amber Club. He was the Assistant Director of Scouting for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1957-1977. A member of the Jockey Hollow Stamp Club, Merrill was also fond of astronomy, military history, and late night bowls of chocolate ice cream.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters, Arlan, Heidi, and Megan, and many extended family members. He will also be missed by the McGuire family and live-in companion, James Amoateng.

The funeral arrangements have been postponed due to inclement weather. Doyle Funeral Home will announce new arrangements when available. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Merrill's memory be made to The Hospice and Palliative Care Area c/o The Foundation for the Morristown Medical Center, 475 South Street, Morristown, NJ 07960 or the charity of his friends' choice.

Dear Mrs. Hess and Family.
I want to express my deepest sympathy in the passing of Merrill. I was a young scout with the Pirates when I met Merril in Pittsburgh in 1973. He
was wonderful kind man who I admired
