Andrew Hopkins Obituary

Andrew Christian Hopkins, MD
DALLAS, Texas -- Andrew Christian Hopkins, MD, died on Sept. 5, 2012, at his home in Dallas, Texas, after a long and courageous struggle with pancreatic cancer. Dr. Hopkins was born on Dec. 31 1957, in Millinocket; he was the son of The Rev. Harold A. Hopkins and Nancy Myer Hopkins of Scarborough. He attended schools in Bar Harbor and Cumberland, and was involved in many extra activities including the family sheep farm. For three years he worked as a stern man on the late William (Bill) Moody's lobster boat, out of South Freeport.
After graduating from Greeley High School Andrew received his BA degree from Brown University and continued his postgraduate arid medical studies at the State University of North Dakota and the medical school of the University of North Dakota. He completed his Residency and training in psychiatry at the University of Vermont Medical School in Burlington.
For several years he held positions in psychiatry in New Hampshire, before moving to Dallas. Dr. Hopkins worked for 17 years at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital where he received a number of awards for excellence in his field, including Outstanding Physician of the Year three times. At an upcoming 'Celebration of Life' at the Hospital this ongoing award will now be named in his honor. He was loved and respected as a wise and gentle human being and physician by patients, staff and peers, as well as family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Hopkins is survived by his wife, Marianne Hopkins, MD; brothers, Thomas Hopkins of Bismarck, N.D., Jonathan Hopkins of Rochester, N.Y., Paul Hopkins of Dubai UAE, and sisters, Elizabeth Hopkins of Hope, and Katherine Piecuch of Memphis, Tenn.
A celebration of Andrew's life is planned for family member and friends next summer. His ashes will be 'committed to the deep' in the vicinity of South Freeport.

My heart has been heavy since learning of Andrew's death. So many of us who went to medical school with Andrew knew what an outstanding, warm, and strong individual he was. It was an honor to know him and I know he touched many more lives than he ever realized.
God Bless Andrew, his wife and family!

Very sad to read of Andrew's passing. INot surprising, it sounds like he led his life in a wonderfully challenging and serving way. I still picture him though, as my young next door neighbor, with a "bunch" of siblings, like me. And when they moved in, they brought a donkey! We had so much fun riding that creature! Go in peace to Gods hands.

I am so sorry to hear about Andy. I often wondered how he was doing, but was never able to locate him.We had such fun times at Greely and in 4-H - he was a champion sheep-shearer! It is no surprise that he took the path he did - he was always so kind and a friend to all. He will be missed by those who knew and loved him. My prayers are with his family
