Carroll Huntress Obituary

HUNTRESS, Carroll Paul Was born on Jan. 4, 1924 in Saco, Maine. During WWII, Carroll served in the Marine Corps and earned battle stars in Tarawa, Kwajalein, Saipan and Okinawa. Following discharge he attended the University of New Hampshire where he starred as a Wildcat running back and also was an outstanding lacrosse player, captained the squad in his senior year and earned All-American recognition. His coaching career began in 1949 in Mechanic Falls High School, Maine. During the 1950s, Carroll taught and coached at Portland High School for four years. Next he coached at both the University of Maryland and Bucknell University, where he was chosen Pennsylvania Coach of the year in 1965, and his team won the Middle Atlantic Conference title. After coaching at the University of Kentucky, Huntress coached nine years with the New York Jets. In 1982, Carroll moved to Dallas and joined the Hunt Petroleum Corporation. He duties as an international representative and later as Trustee took him all over the world. In 1988, he returned to football as the founder and commissioner of the International League of American Football, a league with franchises in several European countries. Carroll was preceded in death by his daughter, Judith Cloughen of Baltimore, Maryland and is survived by his sister, Erlene Davis in Englewood, Florida; his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth Curran Huntress; son Peter Huntress of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; daughters Shari Stewart of Lexington, Kentucky and Pamela Huntress of Dallas, Texas; twelve grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Services will be held at the Church of the Incarnation in Dallas, Saturday, February 14 at 10:00 a.m. in Memorial Chapel.
