Chipp Davis Wells, 65, long time resident of Westerly, RI and summer resident of Gloucester, MA, passed away on July 30, 2013 from a stroke.
Chipp was born in Plainfield, NJ and raised in Fairfield, CT by Richard D. Wells and Jean Davis Wells. From a young age, he demonstrated a passion and talent for art, fostered by summers spent in the Eastern Point Gloucester studio of his maternal grandmother Amee Davis (1893-1972).
Chipp's formal art education was in Rome, Italy, and The Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1970. Soon after graduation, he met the love of his life, Dale Simmonds (1950-2005). They married in 1974, settled in Darien, CT and welcomed their only child, Hollis, in 1978. Chipp's love of art and design led to a long and successful career in advertising as an Art Director on Madison Avenue in New York City.
In 1998 Chipp left his job in advertising to pursue painting full time. Traveling between Westerly and Gloucester, Chipp dedicated the remainder of his life to his art, pugs, and family. A member of many art associations, including the prestigious Rockport Art Association, Chipp's paintings have won a host of awards and appear in numerous private and corporate collections. For many years Chipp was a friend of Bill.
Chipp is survived by his daughter Hollis Wells Silverman of Washington D.C, her husband David, and his beloved granddaughter Davis.
