News Death Notice

SMITH, Richard Stokes age 93 of Fairborn, a loving husband, father and citizen to our community, passed away from this life to a better one Friday March 1, 2013. He was born March 5, 1919 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. During his youth, he was an active Eagle Scout. After graduating from Wofford College, Richard served honorably through World War II as a flight navigator for the 99th Bomb Group for the United States Air Force, serving in several locations including Africa, Germany and Japan. Following his service, he obtained a Masters Degree in Physics from Oklahoma A&M, beginning his professional career with Phillips Petroleum while pursuing a doctorate degree. Richard was a professor at a private liberal arts college in Arkansas and finished his professional career as a physicist at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. Following his retirement, he pursued his love of art through jewelry making, copper enamel, and water color paintings. Richard is survived by his loving family; wife of 67 years, Camilla Hankins Smith; son and daughter-in-law, Douglas Stokes and Sue Smith of Piqua. Graveside service Monday March 4, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. in the Dayton National Cemetery with military honors.
