Martha HOERNEMANN Obituary

HOERNEMANN, Martha J. 97, of Tipp City, formerly of Centerville, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2018. Martha was born to the late James and Bertha (Pfeiffer) Rinehart of New Philadelphia, OH in 1920. After graduating from high school she earned her degree in nursing from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland, and worked there as an RN, as well as Mercy Hospital, in New Philadelphia. After she married her junior high sweetheart, Franklin Hoernemann, in 1942, she moved to Hitchcock, TX for his new assignment as a Marine Corps officer. She served as a wartime industrial nurse at Dow Chemical and other locales. Upon his discharge in 1946, they moved to North Canton, OH, where Frank had accepted a position with the Canton YMCA. Martha was a 35 year member and past president of the Dayton PEO K Chapter, and also a 35 year member and past president of the Dayton Y Wives Club. She was a longtime member of the Hale and Oaks Creek United Church of Christ, volunteering for many missions and activities at both churches. Additionally, she was a member and past president of the Board of Directors at the Dayton Widows Home, and was a longtime volunteer. She was an avid bridge player, joining numerous clubs in Trotwood and Centerville, and continued playing into her 90s at the Randall Residence. She enjoyed traveling, having been to almost all of the US States, as well as, Europe, South America, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Canada. Martha always had a smile on her face, possessed a sunny disposition, and was kind to all who met her. She was hospitable and loved to entertain for many groups she hosted at her home. Martha was preceded in death by her loving husband of 70 years, Franklin; beloved sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Robert Kappeler; and brother, Robert Rinehart. She is survived by sons Jack (Terri) and Richard Hoernemann; daughter, Susan (Dave) Menke; grandchildren, Kara (Josh) Jones, Jonathan Menke, and Justin Menke; and great-granddaughter, Lucy Jones. A visitation will be held from 12:00-2:00pm Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Routsong Funeral home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd. Kettering, OH, with a brief memorial service to follow at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Widows Home of Dayton, 50 S Findlay St, Dayton, OH 45403. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.routsong.com.
