BRUGGEMAN, Robert "Bob" J. Beloved husband of 64 years to Jamie (nee Hawkes)Bruggeman passed away on September 26, 2015, at the age of 88. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, John and Modesta Bruggeman and his beloved grandson, Jonathon Gregory Bruggeman. He is survived by his wife, Jamie, dear brothers Jack Bruggeman and Paul Bruggeman, treasured family friend Mikell Kloeters, and extended family and friends. He was a devoted father to Cathy (Greg) DeMarco, Greg (Felicia McNutt) Bruggeman, Steve (Elizabeth) Bruggeman, Roberta (Scott) Liddic, Jennifer (Chris) Stricker, and Mary (Harold) Mayton, cherished grandfather of Jessica (Will) Rosenbeck, Stephanie and Matt Bruggeman, Holly and Hunter Mayton, Morgan and Jake Liddic, Emma and Jack Bruggeman and Drew and Joe Stricker, and loving great-grandfather of Layla Rosenbeck. Bob served in the Army in WW II, was a public school teacher for 35 years, and worked for the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office for 7 years. Visitation will be on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 from 5 pm - 7 pm followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 7 pm, at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 East Stroop Road, Kettering, OH 45429. The family would like to express our thanks for the wonderful help and care given by Hospice of Dayton. In lieu of flowers, friends may make Memorial Contributions to: Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave, Dayton, OH 45420. Dear Mrs. Bruggeman, family, friends and former students, I'm so sorry to hear this sad news and that I missed the visitation as I would've been there to say goodbye to one of my favorite former teachers.

While I was at Fairview High School from 1976-1980, Mr. Bruggeman taught French, Mythology, and Etymology. From day one of my freshman year I looked forward to being able to take Mythology, but in order to take that class you had to be a Junior. In my Sophomore year, instead of taking Spanish, I took French with Mr. B. just so I could speak with my idol Jacques Cousteau if I ever met him. In his French class, we didn't just learn proper sentence structure, accents, add pronunciation, but France's rich culture, especially the food, like French bread and Vichyssoise that all of us students madepronunciation and ate. Unfortunately, while I was taking French with Mr. B., the Mythology class was taken off the curriculum that spring. I was so sad to miss this awesome class, so I took Etymology where I learned the Greek alphabet and the origin of words. Mr. B. was one of several I remember with fond memories as he as was an amazing teacher. He knew thousands of students in 35 years, but touched the hearts of hundreds that were luckily enough to take at least one class with the man who was tall in stature but also had a gigantic heart for teaching. Once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog.

To those that knew, loved and cared about him, may all the memories you have bring you comfort.

Dear Bruggeman Family, please accept my condolences. Mr. Bruggeman was my French teacher at Fairview HS in the 1970s and, as I write this from Paris, it is clear that he left an important mark on my life. God Bless and may his memory be eternal.

So saddened to learn of Bob's death. He was one of my favorite teachers. Would see him frequently either at the Beavercreek library or the Beavercreek Senior Center. He always remembered me and we always shared many memories (even after 58 years). He will be missed by many.

This may be a little long for a remembrance on this site, but my heart is overflowing with memories of my teacher, mentor, and friend, Monsieur Bob Bruggeman. I send gentle healing thoughts toward his wife, Jamie, and all six of his children.
Not only was Mr. B's French class challenging, it was varied, interesting and fun. Along with studying verb conjugations, we took dictation, watched French newscasts, learned current idioms, and were immersed in the French culture. We considered the literature, art, architecture, music that the French had contributed to the world. We studied maps and practiced accents from various parts of the country in the language lab. He encouraged us to have authentic conversations, go on field tripsa French pastry shop, a play by Moliere. And best of all, WE WENT TO FRANCE! Granted, this was an advanced placement course, but really, how many teachers would cover all this so completely?
Mr. Bruggeman once told me that the highlight of his career was when I competed in the annual competition of the American Association of Teachers of French (1968) and won top national honors, including medals from the French government. This honor, of course, was more a reflection on him than on me. However, his pride in this event made me beam, too.
In Mr. Bruggeman's class, not all instruction was centered on French. For example, one of the Brugg-isms I recall was that while driving, one should not perceive oncoming traffic as cars, but rather as people surrounded by a bit of metal. Another was how to remember a phone number: take a mental picture of the first three digits, store that picture, and repeat the last 4 digits twice. It actually works well. I think of these things often, as I will continue to think of him.
One of the most touching memories I have of Mr. B was when I received a phone call from him about 15 years ago. He said he was just calling to see if I was all right. This happened just after the death of Shelle Unger, a fellow student and traveler to France with me. Bob could barely stand the thought that one of his students would predecease him. That was the start of our practice of meeting for lunch three times a yearhis birthday (March), my birthday (November) and Bastille Day (July). In the past few years, we have had to work around hospitalizations and doctor's releases, but we haven't missed any. There are many, many restaurants in the Dayton area that hold memories of a wonderful friendship with a man I could not have respected and treasured more.
