Charles DENNY III Obituary
DENNY III, Charles Wampler (Charley as he preferred to be called), of Naples, FL passed away on November 13, 2018. He was born on December 21, 1935 in Middletown, OH to Charles and Lucile (nee Hess) Denny Jr. He married "the great love of his life", Sandra Fletcher in 1964. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Jack Denny. He was a graduate of Middletown High, the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, CT, Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT, and received an MBA from Northwestern University. At Wesleyan he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. Upon graduating from Northwestern in 1960, he joined his family's company, The Barkelew Electric. Charley moved through a variety of positions before becoming plant manager when his father sold to the Square D Company in 1967. In 1972 Charley was promoted to the manager of Square D's Circuit Breaker Division in Cedar Rapids, IA. Then in 1985, he moved to Lexington, KY as Vice President over the Distribution Equipment Group. He served in a number of positions both in Lexington, KY, and Palatine, IL. In 1991, Square D was purchased by the Schneider Group of Paris, France. He was appointed President of Schneider North America. This organization included all of Schneider's interests in the America's, including Square D. Charley served on many civic, charitable, and industrial boards. He retired in 2000 and thereafter he and Sandy spent much of their time in Naples, FL. Sandy and Charley belonged to a number of clubs including Barrington Hills Country Club, and The McGraw Foundation in the Chicago area, Bay Colony Country Club, the Naples Yacht Club and Hole in the Wall Golf Club in Naples. Charley is survived by his incredible wife, Sandy, and three very successful sons, Colonel Darrin (Cindy) Denny of Williamsburg, VA, Chip Denny (Charles IV), a lawyer and member of a prominent law firm in Sarasota, FL, and Jeff (Vickie) Denny of Birmingham, MI. Jeff has worked very successfully in the industrial world, a far better businessman than his father. Six wonderful grandchildren filled Charley with the wonderment of grandparenting, two boys, Andrew and Burke, and four granddaughters, Charley, Britney, Charlotte, and Isabel. Although much of this obituary is filled with his industrial experience, that is not where his heart lived. As he often said, he did only one great thing in his life and that was to marry Sandy. Every good thing in his life grew from that union. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to: Avow Hospice 1095 Whippoorwill Ln, Naples, FL 34105, or Simon Cancer Center of Indianapolis 535 Barnhill Dr, Indianapolis, IN 46202, or the Naples Humane Society in honor of Cappy, Bunker, Brandy, Buttons, Wrinkles, Smokey, and Trigger his beloved pet dogs.
