Dick OVERLA Obituary

News Death Notice

OVERLA, Dick formerly of West Milton and Bethel, OH passed away in his sleep late in the early morning of Sunday, July 21, 2013 at his most current residence of Batavia, OH. Dick was born December 3, 1936 to William and Mary Overla in York Township, Darke County, Ohio. He was a 1955 graduate of West Milton and was the catalyst for many powerful bulldog athletic teams. After graduating from West Milton he went on to play football for Lee Tressell at Baldwin-Wallace University in Berea, OH. Dick joined the Air Force branch of the military after leaving Baldwin-Wallace and obtained his teaching license/coaching certification while in the service. He taught for 2 years in Texas, one year in Greenville and then joined the staff at his alma mater in 1967. He taught at Milton-Union for 4 years before leaving to teach for four years at Bethel-Tate and 1 year at Preble Shawnee. Those who knew him described him as a fierce competitor and firm disciplinarian, all the while having a soft spot for certain youth. Dick left education in the fall of 1978, starting his own concrete business and then working for the Army Corps of Engineers from 1985 until his retirement in 2011. Dick was inducted in the Milton-Union Hall of Fame this past February, an accomplishment he described as "being one of the most important events of (his) life." Preceding Dick in death are four of his siblings, Max, Robert, Jack Overla, and Marjorie Albaugh and his wife, Eunice Rose (Smith) Overla . He is survived by his four children, Arthur (Cathy) Overla, Gary (Susan) Overla, Kelli (Johnny) Maggard, and Stephanie (Michael) Luebker. He is survived by 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Hale-Sarver Funeral Home of West Milton and he is interred in Riverside cemetery. Memorial Donations may be made to Milton-Union High School Alumni Association.
