John Friel Obituary

FRIEL, John William "Bill" Professor Emeritus, died peacefully at Brookhaven Nursing Home under Hospice care on June 11, 2018; age 81. Bill was a wonderful man, well-loved and well-liked. He earned a BA in Mathematics from Loras College and an MA in Mathematics from Duquesne University. Bill retired from UD in 1999 after 36 years of service, and continued to teach part-time at UD until 2007 Bill is survived by his wife of 38 years Beverly; sons: Patrick, wife Ronda, daughter Shelley; Edward; Daniel, wife Marina, daughter Shannon; stepson Duane, wife Rose; stepdaughter Elaine, husband Mark. Brother Patrick D, resides in Lawrence Kansas with wife, Vicki. Professor Friel taught FORTRAN in the Computer Science Department at University of Dayton, and was one of the early adopters of MAPLE in UD's calculus classrooms. He served many years as Marshal and Head Marshal for UD. Bill was very active in the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), of which he was a member for more than 50 years. He held elected office in the Ohio Section of the MAA as President, Secretary-Treasurer, and Treasurer. Bill donated his body to the Anatomical Gift Program at Wright State University School of Medicine. Memorial gifts may be sent to Hospice or a charity of choice. Brookhaven Nursing Home gave Bill compassionate care. Very kind, efficient, and willing staff helped Bill, family and friends.
