News Death Notice

COPLEY, Ruth M. Age 87, was promoted into the eternal presence of Jesus Christ on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, from the BrookHaven Nursing Care Center, in Brookville, OH. She was born on Oct. 6, 1925 to John G. and Rosetta (Rosie) Gilmore, of North Tonawanda, NY. The first of five children, she graduated from North Tonawanda High School as class salutatorian in 1943. Having been awarded a four year scholarship to Buffalo State Teachers College, she attended there two years, then surrendered the scholarship to finish her undergraduate work at the (Free Methodist Church's) Greenville College (IL) in 1947. Her elementary school teaching career spanned twenty-eight years, starting with two years in Oakdale Christian School in Breathitt County (KY) and ending with 18 years in the Dayton Christian Schools (OH). In between were other schools, public and private, including also NY and IN locations. In 1951 she met and married Elmer Halson Copley, a theological seminary student. Together they served Christ in churches both in Indiana and Ohio, plus seven years as missionaries in Rome, Italy. Her final service role was from 2000 to 2007 with her husband as chaplain at BrookHaven Retirement Community in Brookville, OH. She is survived by her husband, Hal. The couple adopted and raised two children, Dean Copley, Dayton, OH; and Terri (Lee) Jones, Tipp City, OH; who survive. Also surviving are siblings (& spouses): John G. Gilmore, Jr., Greenville, IL; Doris (Ralph) Chapman, Lansing, MI; Esther (Homer) Ruckle, St. Marys, WV; and David (Barbara) Gilmore, London, OH; two granddaughters: Candice (Joe) Catullo, Cleveland, OH; and Corrie Jones, Tipp City, OH; plus uncounted nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death: her parents, and sister-in-law, Alene (White) Gilmore in 2010. Ruth's body was donated to the Wright State University School of Medicine. Retired Pastor William I. Brown will conduct the Memorial Service at the Covenant Baptist Church, 3424 Old Salem Road, Dayton, OH, at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2013.
