News Death Notice

MULLINS, Scott A. of Dayton, passed away on February 19, 2013, after ninety-three days at Miami Valley Hospital. He put up a strong fight to live after sustaining a gunshot wound by a convicted felon, who used an illegal firearm. Scott served in the US Navy that included him crossing the equator; he was found worthy to be numbered as one of the Trusty Shellbacks and was initiated into the Solemn Mysteries of the Ancient Order of the Deep. On his second equator crossing, Scott had the honor and pleasure of initiating his commander since it was his first time. Scott graduated from Wright State University with a BS degree in Business and was employed by Reynolds & Reynolds, Homes by Bill Simms, HBS and Mullins, Ins. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bradley "Brad" Mullins; grandparents, Edward M. and Hazel Scott, Clarence and Naomi Mullins; father and uncle, Dorrell "Sleepy" Scott. Scott is survived by his mother, Betty Scott Mullins; sister, Kimberly Mullins Edelen; son, Matthew Mullins, Matthew's fiancé, Chelsea Palmer; granddaughter, Emilee Mullins, and a grandson on the way, who are all in the Dayton/Kettering area; uncles, Pearl Scott, Charles "Bill" (Sonja) Scott, of Athens, Virgil (Janet), of Fort Collins, Colorado; aunt, Reba Kay Peck, of Athens; great uncle and aunt, Tom and Eleanor Windland, of Canton; "Big Brother", Bill Simms, of Russells Point, Ohio; "Big Sister", Jackie McArdle, of Englewood and their family, Stephanie Simms Carter, Michael and Alex Simms, and dearly loved cousins and friends. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks for the wonderful care Scott received in ICU, Burn Unit, and Trauma Center along with Dr. Ekeh and Dr. Robinson, while at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton. Family will greet friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 22, 2013 at Reis Legacy Center Meyer-Boehmer Chapel, 6661 Clyo Rd., Centerville. A Celebration of Scott's life, including special readings and a time of sharing memories of Scott will begin at 8:00 p.m. Honoring Scott's life will continue on Saturday, February 23rd with a visitation from 12:00-2:00 p.m. at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, 24 Morris Ave., Athens, Ohio. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Following burial at South Canaan Baptist Church Cemetery a luncheon will be served for family and friends of Scott at the church. Because blood was a constant part of Scott's treatment, the family would like to give back to others in Scott's memory; therefore, in lieu of flowers, two memorial blood drives will be held at the Community Blood Center, Dayton and American Red Cross, Athens during the week of April 7-12, 2013.
