Silvia Peterjanis MATTHEWS Obituary
MATTHEWS M.D., Dr. Silvia Peterjanis Formerly of Trenton, OH passed away 11/6/2017. Silvia was born in Riga, Latvia 3/23/1924. Surviving the horrors of WWII; Silvia, her sister (Irene), her Mother, and nephews trekked months from Latvia, surviving the terrors of the front between the Nazis and Communists, to reach part of Germany freed by the Allies. They lived in a Refugee Camp in Hildesheim, Germany. Silvia attended Georg-August Medical School in Gottingen. Germany where she met her husband to be, Mischa (Michael A. Matthews M.D.) They were married in 1948. Their daughter, Mara was born in Gottingen. They and many other families from the Hildesheim Refugee Camp were sponsored to the USA by a wonderful Quaker gentleman, Mr. Petersime of Gettyburg, OH. They both completed their internship and residency at Bethesda Hospital in Cincinnati, OH where their first son, Andre, was born. The Trenton, OH Lion's Club hired them as physicians for Trenton where their son, Peter, was born. Dr. Silvia delivered many of the "Baby Boomers" in Trenton. They were both very involved with the Boy Scouting program for decades, receiving the highest recognitions awarded. Dr. Silvia was invited by Lady Baden-Powell, the wife of the Founder of the Boy Scouts Lord Baden - Powell, to teach courses to Boy Scout Leaders in America and Europe. In the 1970's she accepted a position as Medical Director for the GM Plant in Hamilton, OH and then as Medical Director for the Dayton GM Plant until retirement. Both she and Dr. Mike moved to Fountain Hills, AZ where they became enthusiastic golfers at the local club. She even scored a Hole in One while in her early 70's. Dr. Michael A. Matthews passed in 1998. She is survived by: Mara & husband Janis Malins (grandchildren: Dzintra and Krisjanis), Dr. Andre Matthews & wife Debra (Grandchildren: Patrick & wife, Theodora & great-granddaughter Basil, Alex & wife Colette & great granddaughter Brooklyn, Theodore & wife Michelle, & grandsons Michael & Joseph, and Son Dr. Peter Matthews & wife Alberta (Grandchildren: Janis, Alberts, & Eriks). There will be a gathering of the family and local friends at 3pm on 12/3/17 at Silvia's home. Dr. Silvia will be reunited with her husband, Dr. Mike, at the Latvian Cemetery ROTA in New York in May, 2018.
