CASSELL, Alice LaVern (Ditmer) age 89, of Arcanum, passed on Thursday June 26, 2014. She was born March 23, 1925 on Red River West Grove Road, Arcanum. Her parents were Harley and Susie (Miller) Ditmer. She married Bernie Cassell on February 23, 1946 in Pitsburg. Alice graduated from Monroe High School, Pitsburg, in 1944. Alice was a Homemaker and Mother. She was a 4-H advisor for 20 years for the Monroe Banner 4-H Club. Alice was very active in the Church of the Brethren. She grew up at Pitsburg Church of the Brethren and accepted Christ in 1937. Alice became a lifetime Deacon in 1970 at Potsdam Church of the Brethren where she taught primary Sunday School class for 50 years. Alice served on the Christian Education board at church for several years. She served on many commissions of the church. Alice along with her family, were Care-Takers of the church for many years. She enjoyed singing, playing piano, playing her cornet, and played in her school bands for nine years. Alice loved taking pictures and decorated the bulletin board at church, as well as doing many photo albums. She was very creative and liked to paint. Alice was a wonderful cook. Most of all she loved the Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bernie Cassell, who died March 27, 2012 and two Sisters Anna Lucille and Mabel Elizabeth (Ditmer) Wenger. Surviving are her five children: Sue (Kerry) Price, Milford, IN; Brenda Shiverdecker, Arcanum; Rosemary (Tom) Harvey, Warren, IN; Roger (Carole) Cassell, South Haven, MI; Jeff (Margret) Cassell, Vandalia. She has nine grandchildren: Kevin (Lori) Price; Kara (Mark) Messmore; Ryan (Holly) Shiverdecker; Adam Shiverdecker; Katelin (Tony) Herber; Heather Cassell; Brittany (Brian) Soderquist; Lauren Cassell; Kacie Cassell. Two step grandchildren, Zach Sheehy and D J Lawson. There are 14 great- grandchildren. Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held 10:00 AM on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at Potsdam Church of the Brethren with Pastor Robert W. Kurtz officiating. Burial will follow in Mote Cemetery. The Family will receive relatives and friends Monday 5 - 8 PM at the church. The Family suggests memorial contributions to Potsdam Church of the Brethren.
