News Death Notice

APPLE, William Alfred (Bill) Age 91, resident of Seminole, Florida passed away on 06/09/2014. He was the son of William A. Apple and Jessie I. Apple. Bill attended the University of Cincinnati, served in the military and received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Degree from Case Institute of Technology, now Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a member of the social fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and several honoraries and other campus organizations. He was also a Mason. Bill became president of W.A. Apple Mfg. Inc. at the death of his father who in the early 1910's made auto tops for Henry Ford (The Ford Motor Company). Later his father manufactured his own car: the Apple 4 and 8 cylinders until a disastrous fire terminated this endeavor. In the late 1930's he started manufacturing Air Force items for Wright Field making engine warming covers and aerial tow targets for the Navy until his death. Under Bill's direction the company expanded making more Life Support items and parachutes, parachute harnesses, etc. for the U. S. Air Force, Navy and the Army. His sister, Martha and he discontinued the manufacturing business in 1981, after 33 years. Bill is survived by his sister, Martha J. Apple of Bethany Retirement Center in Centerville, Ohio. Survivors include his nieces, Mary K. Short, Velma Lodes and Anna Goodman, his cousins, Lois McCoy and Virginia Koogler and many relatives and friends including his good friend and companion, William C. Blain. Growing up, Bill attended a Christian Science Sunday School. He has since found joy in attending various churches. At Bill's request, there will be no services of flowers. In Bill's memory, donations may be made to a church or . Arrangements made by Lewis W. Mohn Funeral Home of Seminole, Florida. Burial will be in the family plot in Woodland Cemetery, Dayton, Ohio.
