Edward S. Bloom
Edward S. Bloom died of heart failure at Granite Farms Estate Thursday, March 8, 2012, birthdate of his late wife.
Ed was born in Mascot, Nebraska on August 19, 1913. Until high school when his family moved to Lincoln, he was raised with his older brother, Irving (deceased) and younger sister, Fern (Heim) in western rural NE.
While at the University of Nebraska, Ed's passion and potential in academics and music - he played the string bass - took him to the Interlochen (MI) Arts Camp formerly National Music Camp. Music introduced him to UN classmate (trombonist) Winifred Shallcross. Both were active in fraternities, she Phi Mu and he Kappa Sigma. After Ed received his BS (Phi Beta Kappa) and masters degree, the two married in 1936 and moved to Madison WI, where he earned his doctorate in organic chemistry. During WWII Ed was exempted from armed service due to his research efforts with penicillin and folic acid at Parke-Davis in Detroit MI. For his participation in isolating folic acid, he was named to 'Who's Who in Science'.
From 1947 to his retirement in 1977, Ed worked for the DuPont Company in Wilmington. Though he began as an organic chemist, his genial personality and ability to assess potential in candidates, led him to many years of hiring for the Plastics Department. He greatly enjoyed connecting with university professors throughout the world, seeking most capable employees for the company. Long after retiring, he remained proud of those who successfully grew their careers benefitting the company. During his thirty years at DuPont, he actively participated in the American Chemical Society, Society of Plastics Engineers, and was elected Fellow of the American Association of the Advancement of Science in 1964.
Throughout their almost sixty years of marriage, Ed and Winnie actively enjoyed traveling with their children while young and into their retirement years. Prior to Winnie's death in 1995 they delighted in their home in Vermont on Long Pond near Lake Willoughby in the Northeast Kingdom, teaching their love of nature to their grandchildren, welcoming relatives and friends from around the world for hikes up Mt. Haystack, loon seeking, enjoying lakeside activities. Both he and Winnie were active leaders in Westminster Presbyterian Church (Wilmington) and Westmore Community Church (VT).
Ed is survived by his daughter, Lynn Carbonell and her husband Joseph (Chadds Ford, PA); his son, Eric (Charleston SC); Mercy Carbonell, (Exeter NH), Mac Carbonell and his wife Laurice, and two children, Leo and Cecilia (Brooklyn NY); Serena Carbonell and her husband John Guerin (Lake Forest Il); Jennifer Bloom Fort and her daughter Alexis (Charleston SC).
A private service will be held in the Memorial Garden of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Celebration of his life, also at Westminster, will take place at a time to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his memory be sent to the Chemical Heritage Foundation, 315 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia PA 19106, or to a
charity of one's choice.
