David F. Ponsell
AGE: 76 • Wilmington
David Francis Ponsell, age 76, died at home December 28, 2015. He is survived by his wife Portia, and their two sons Mark Andrew Ponsell (Lisa) of Wilmington; David Scott Ponsell (Sharon) of Felton, DE; and three grandchildren Sammantha, Portia Marie, and Mark Anthony.
He is also survived by a sister, Mary Louise Ponsell, of Wilmington. He was predeceased by a brother, Richard C. Ponsell. Other survivors include nieces Karen Baxley of Frederick, MD; Sandra Trapp of Archer, FL., and nephew Michael R. Ponsell of Morgantown, PA. Mr. Ponsell was the son of Francis Irenee Ponsell and Mazie Campbell of Wilmington.
A graduate of Northeastern School of Pharmacy in Boston, he joined the family business as a pharmacist. The Ponsell drugstores, including five pharmacies, were at one time the largest independent drug store chain in Delaware. He married Portia Robinson of Narragansett, RI, in 1964. Following the sale of the Ponsell drugstores, Mr. Ponsell joined successively Warner and Rite Aid until his retirement. As a lover of genealogy, he was instrumental in researching several thousand names of Ponsell ancestors Together with his sister, Mary Louise, he compiled and published a family history back to the 1500's in Europe and America. The Ponsells originated in Palma, Mallorca. In recent years, Mr. Ponsell built a vacation home in Lewes, DE., where the family gathered for many good times.
A viewing will be held Monday, January 4, 2016, at 10 AM, followed by a service at 11 AM at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington DE 19803. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park.

The Ponsell Family has lost a true treasure. I have spent many nights talking to my cousin, David, on the phone discussing the rich heritage of the Ponsell's of the Balearic Islands.He will truly be missed.May God bless and comfort the Ponsell family in this time of sorrow.
