David Hiram Smith(1935 - 2013)

David Hiram Smith

Age 77, formerly of Newark, DE and South MS, Gulf Coast, passed away on February 27, 2013.

David attended Isle of Wight Boarding School in England, the University of Illinois and Illinois Tech in Chicago. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. David worked in marketing in office equipment and then owned Crown Business Machine Store in Newark, DE before obtaining his pilots aviation license. David then became a full time commercial pilot retiring in 1999.

He was a member of a variety of community programs from children's baseball coach to Chamber of Commerce Work and was a Veterans Administration Volunteer. David enjoyed fishing, golf, bridge, baseball games and training and showing dogs in obedience shows. He and his wife Ruth were foster parents for 24 infants and young children awaiting adoptive parents.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Hiram and Lucille Smith, his sister,Jean Ardelt. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth Smith, his children, Sarah Healey (David) and Jeffrey Smith, his grandchildren, David Healey (Mindy), Michael Healey, Christine Healey and Samantha Smith, his brothers, Thomas Smith (Elaine) and George Smith ( Mickie) and his brother-in-law C.A. Ardelt.

A memorial service will be held on March 3, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. at Limestone Presbyterian Church, 3201 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808 where friends may call after 3:00 p.m. Burial will private.
