Frances Peterson
AGE: 93 •
Mary Frances Peterson, age 93, departed this life to be reunited with her devoted husband Jack and her daughter Sharon Jean. Frances, the daughter of Claude J. and Elise Shiflet, was born in Wilmington, Virginia. She spent many happy summers there on her grandparents' farm where a lifelong appreciation of nature was born. Her love of the arts was nurtured by a dedicated teacher who directed her as a child actress in Washington D.C. Poetry and music (especially opera) gave her great joy and enriched her life. She would often give spontaneous recitations of poems and passages from Shakespeare. While a student at George Washington University during WWII, Frances married a young Navy Lieutenant who would share her enthusiasm for ballroom dancing, sports and travel. Their RV travels alone encompassed the entirety of the U.S. and Canada. They also enjoyed frequent travel abroad. Frances and Jack were original founders of the Delaware Epilepsy Association which would serve as a valuable resource for Delawareans.
Frances is survived by her daughter Julie F. Peterson DMD, son-in-law Michael B. McCauley, Esq., brother Claude J. Shiflet DDS and grandchildren Lauren and Kenneth McCauley. Lauren enjoyed a special relationship with her Nana that enlivened her later years.
