John Franklin Mitchell, age 62 of Middletown, DE died on Sunday, July 13, 2014 at his home.

A native of Salisbury, MD, he graduated from Wicomico High School, where he became a star athlete and an Eagle Scout, an accomplishment of which he was very proud. He graduated from Salisbury State College, with a degree in Education and Wesley Seminary, Washington, D.C. with a Masters of Divinity.

A Methodist pastor for 39 years, John served the Nanticoke, Bivalve, and Tyaskin Charge as Student Pastor. From there, he was appointed as Senior Pastor to Gethsemane UMC in Reliance, DE; Asbury UMC in Crisfield, MD; St. John's UMC in Seaford, DE; Trinity UMC in Salisbury, MD. While there, he was appointed as District Superintendent to the Wilmington District, serving in that capacity until his appointment to Hockessin UMC in Hockessin, DE where he was Senior Pastor for the last 9 years. He retired from there June 30, 2014. During that time, John also served as Chair of the Board of Ordained Ministries, a role which he took very seriously, guiding and encouraging ministerial candidates in becoming effective pastors.

John was known and respected throughout the Peninsula-Delaware United Methodist Conference for his leadership skills, his understanding of the many responsibilities of a pastor, and his passion for his calling. His distinctive laugh and sense of humor will be missed, but remembered by all who knew him.

John is survived by his wife, Janet Mitchell, 3 sons, Ethan, Christopher (wife Paula), and Tyler; a step-daughter, Merit Wolff (husband Bill Berry) and daughters MaryKent and Camryn; a step-son, Dan Brand (wife Dawn) and son Nathan, 2 step-sons, Brandon and Paul; also, sister Brenda Messick (husband Don), brother Edward (wife Carroll), sister Trudy (husband Andy), and his mother, Maria Mitchell.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 18 at 12:30 p.m. at Hockessin United Methodist Church, 7250 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE. Friends may greet the family at the church from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hockessin UMC or Delaware Hospice, 16 Polly Drummond Center, 2nd Floor, Newark, DE 19711.
