Joseph J. Alfes, age 89, of New Castle, DE passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, March 4, 2014.

Born in Trenton, NJ on August 28, 1924, Mr. Alfes was a son of the late Joseph F. Alfes and Mary M. Przecha Alfes. He proudly served his country in the 8th Air Force where he achieved the rank of Sergeant. After receiving his undergraduate degree from New York University, Mr. Alfes made his career as an accountant working first for the Ronson Corporation in Delaware and later for NVF in Pennsylvania.

An avid outdoorsman, he greatly enjoyed fishing and golfing. In his leisure time, Mr. Alfes relished gardening and woodworking. He adored spending time with his granddaughters who were the apples of his eye. Above all else, he was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and 2 sisters. Mr. Alfes is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Bernice D. Zytko Alfes; children, David J. Alfes and wife Cheryl of Easton, MD, Regina M. Alfes of New Castle, DE, Joseph J. Alfes, Jr. and wife Lynn of Sarasota, FL, Rex C. Alfes and wife Lisa of Yardley, PA and Cheryl A. Alfes and husband James Krull of Colver, PA; brothers, Tom Alfes and wife Dawn of MI, Chuck Alfes of CA and Bob Alfes of CA; sisters, Patty Maloney of AZ and Elizabeth Pye of NJ; 6 granddaughters, Courtney Poore and husband Josh, Sarah Alfes, Lauren Alfes, Kimberly Alfes, Shannon Alfes and Kristine Alfes; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call from 8:15 am until 9:15 am on Monday morning, March 10, 2014 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 am on Monday morning, March 10, 2014, at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, 801 N. DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE. Interment will follow in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
