Leslie K. Bowen

Leslie K. Bowen

Mr. Leslie K. Bowen, known fondly as "Les," age 83, of New Castle, DE, passed away very peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Sunday, September 29, 2013.

Born in New Castle on June 16, 1930, Les was the son of the late Paul Bowen and Elva Morgan Bowen. He was a 1949 graduate of William Penn High School, where he played baseball, football, and basketball.

A proud veteran of both the US Air Force and the Delaware Air National Guard, Les was honored to serve his country for over 37 years. He joined the Air Guard while still in high school and entered active duty as a master sergeant in 1951 during the Korean War. After being released from the Air Force in 1952, he re-enlisted in the Air Guard, becoming a full-time air technician. He retired from military service in 1982 with the rank of master sergeant and was honorably discharged from the Air Guard in 1986.

In earlier years, Les enjoyed spending time at his beach house, crabbing, playing and watching softball games, and spending Saturday afternoons with great friends and family at the Log Cabin, the Green Frog, or St. Anthony's Club, where he was a member. He was an avid Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies fan. But, most of all, Les enjoyed rooting on and cheering for his children and grandchildren while they participated in sports such as wrestling, baseball, softball, field hockey, and many others.

In addition to his parents, Les was preceded in death by seven siblings, brothers, Norman, Alvin, Jimmy, Wilbert, Paul, Charles, and sister, Marion, and by his son-in-law, Frank D. DelCoglin, Jr. Les will be dearly missed by his wife, Mary E. Proud Bowen, with whom he celebrated 62 years of marriage on September 22nd; his children, Cindy L. Lagarelli and husband Rick, Leslie K. Bowen, Jr., and Sandy K. DelCoglin; grandchildren, Nick, Kristina, Michelle, Bubba, Kelly, and Kaitlin; and great grandchildren, Kaylee and Jordyn, whom he adored.

On behalf of Les, the family would like to send a special thank you to Dr. Giberson, Dr. Trochimowicz, Audrey Collins, Denise Schrimsher, and Joseph Seward for the special care and attention given to Les. Denise and Joe, Les truly loved you both and words cannot express our gratitude for all of the kind actions and attention you provided him.

A funeral service will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, October 4th, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where visitation will begin at 10 am. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.
