Sophia I. Sluzar

Sophia Sluzar, age 75, of Wilmington, DE died Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at her home surrounded by her family.

Sophia was a historian and editor who specialized in Eastern European studies. A native of Ukraine, she immigrated to the United States with her parents and siblings after World War II and settled in Philadelphia. She was executive editor of the bimonthly "Problems of Communism," in Washington, D.C., for a decade. Before that, she worked as a special assistant for the Agency for International Development during the Carter administration.

Sophia served as president of the Delaware Branch of the Ukrainian National Women's League of America for many years. She was active in the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies and the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Science in New York.

She is survived by four nieces, Maria Zmurkewycz and Theresa Zmurckewycz, both of Philadelphia, Marta Salij of Birmingham, MI, and Elena Salij of New York City, and one nephew, Roman Salij of Riverside, IL.
