Wenbo Li

Dr. Wenbo Li, a noted University of Delaware mathematician who studied probability theory and stochastic processes, passed away on Saturday, January 26, 2013 from a sudden heart attack. He was 49.

Dr. Li was born on October 27, 1963 in Harbin, China, to Jun Li and Shuxian Cui. He received a B.S. in mathematics from Jilin University and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A Newark resident, he was married for 26 years to his wife, Sunny Xiang. They have a son, James, a graduate of the University of Southern California.

Dr. Li was a UD professor of mathematical sciences since 1992. He was also an adjunct professor of electrical and computer engineering and held a number of distinguished visiting appointments overseas. He devoted himself to developing fundamental tools in probability theory to improve the understanding of random phenomena, with a specific focus on rare events. He received a number of awards and distinctions, including being elected a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) for his distinguished research in the theory of Gaussian processes and in using this theory to solve important problems in diverse areas of probability.

Dr. Li was passionate about making a difference in the lives of his students. He also loved to travel and ski. He will be fondly remembered by his students and his colleagues for his original thinking and dedication to mathematics and education. His family and friends will always remember him for his adventurous spirit and his loving and generous heart.

He is survived by his wife Sunny and his son Jimmy.
