Bill Schlegel, age 81, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 20, 2013 at Heartland Hospice House.

Bill was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late William and Edith Schlegel.

Bill graduated from Purdue University where he served in the Air Force ROTC and was Captain of the varsity Rifle Team. Bill later served our country as a 1st Lieutenant in the Air Force.

Bill worked at All American Engineering in Wilmington for 20 years as Chief Engineer. He is the holder of 5 patents involving aircraft arresting gear. He then moved to the DuPont Co. where he held various positions managing mechanical engineering service and retired as a Leader of Procurement Services.

Bill was an avid hunter and enjoyed shooting at local clubs. Skiing and golf were also hobbies. His greatest passion and pleasure was sailing and racing on the Chesapeake Bay on his boat "Feather." He had a loyal crew of friends and family with whom he enjoyed many successful racing campaigns with the Georgetown Racing Fleet. Bill was a veteran of many offshore sailing races, including several Bermuda races, as a crew member of "VIB." He was an instructor of seamanship with the Wilmington Power Squadron.

Bill was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife Audrey, son Bruce, and his grandchildren Jennifer and Robert. He was loved and will be missed by all.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Bill's name to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 8th Ave., 7th Fl., New York, NY 10001.
