William Aukamp Obituary

William Moore Aukamp

Wilmington, DE - William Moore Aukamp, age 81 of Wilmington, DE, passed away on April 1, 2018 at Wilmington Hospital. William earned his Bachelor's degree from Lafayette College and continued on to earn his Juris Doctor degree from Cornell University Law School.

Throughout his lifetime, William was a partner in the New York law firm of Dalton, Henoch & Aukamp and the Washington, DC firm of Anderson, Aukamp & Gingold. William served as President of the Delaware Bankers Association and was also Vice President and head of the legal department at Security National Bank. He later helped to establish Chemical Bank Delaware, initially serving as its General Counsel and later as its President and CEO. William most recently worked as Chief Trust Officer and acting Chief Operating Officer for the Reserve Trust Company in Denver, CO.

William was a parishioner of Christ Church in Greenville, DE. Additionally, he was a member of the Vicmead Hunt Club as well as both the New York and Delaware State Bar Associations.

William's hobbies included tennis, squash and traveling with his wife, Lee Ann. The two loved taking trips to Long Island, NY, where they enjoyed sailing and spending time with one another.

Though William's professional accomplishments were of great prestige, it was his brilliant personality that garnered much admiration. He was caring, loved to take on new challenges and had a fantastic sense of humor. William had a warmth about him that never failed to make everyone around him comfortable and he will truly be missed by all that knew him.

William is survived by his wife, Lee Ann of Wilmington, DE; his son, Brooks, his wife Charlotte and their daughter, Eleuthera of Washington, DC; as well as his brother, Donald of Hawthorne, NJ.

An amazing lawyer, incredible human being, one of the gentlest, funniest, smartest , self-effacing men ever. He was my boss and later a colleague in several ventures of his creation. Nothing discouraged him or made him stop learning and sharing that learning with others. His brilliance made him always a step ahead of industry and legal trends. He made such a difference in my life, professionally and personally. So saddened to learn that he is gone.

Bill was generous to mentor younger attorneys and believe in their potential. He made sure they knew why laws were written and the history of previous laws. Personally he was kind and always willing to help make introductions. Bill was very generous in sharing his scholarship in banking law for which he was prodigious as an author. I always enjoyed my time with Bill and appreciate his support professionally and personally. My condolences to his family and friends.
