AGE: 85 • Hockessin

Alan D. Bull, 85, of Hockessin, DE passed away surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, March 17, 2016.

Born in Southampton, England on July 16, 1930, Alan served in the British Merchant Navy as an electrical officer aboard the RMS Queen Mary. While living in England, he enjoyed sports and was active in soccer, rugby, boxing and rowing. Alan and his wife came to the United States as newlyweds in 1952, when he accepted a position with his uncle, Dr. William Batt, at a cancer research facility in Newark, DE. He later joined the DuPont Company and worked as an International Technical Representative, retiring after 35 years of service.

Alan brought his love of soccer to the States and was very active in the local sport's community. He was one of the founding members of Kirkwood Soccer Club. Alan coached, refereed, and played for several soccer teams throughout his life. He was especially proud to have had the opportunity to tour England and Holland in the 1970s with players from Kirkwood Soccer Club. Alan was also a life time member of the Minquadale Fire Company and a member of the Elks Lodge. Alan and his wife enjoyed spending the winter months at their home in southwest Florida and were active members of the South Gulf Cove Yacht Club.

Alan was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Alice; and his brother, Peter.

Alan is survived by his wife of 64 years, Eileen Martin Bull; his sister, Pamela Hunt (Peter); his children, David (Patricia), Stephanie Cooper (John), and Sharon Baird (Robert); his grandchildren, Kimberly Cooper, Cameron Bull, Peter Cooper and Colleen Winnington; his great grandchildren, Domynic, Ariyanna, Giovanni, Gianna, Sylvia and Parker.

Friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Wednesday, March 23 from 2:00-3:00PM, with a remembrance service immediately following.

The family would like to thank the staff of Heartland Hospice House for their love, care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Alan may be made to Heartland Hospice House, 5661 Ochletree Lane, Wilmington, DE 19808.
