Mrs. Aleyamma Mammen (1919-2013)
Mrs. Aleyamma Mammen, aged 94, passed away at the Kentmere Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Wilmington, Delaware where she had been a resident since 2005. Born in 1919 in Kerala, India as the youngest in a family of 6, she completed her high school education. She was enrolled in the School of Nursing at the Scudder Memorial Hospital in Ranipet, India when she married Mr. K. E. Mammen who had just returned to India after the privations the Japanese occupation of the Malay Peninsula where he worked. She joined her husband in Malaya (Malaysia) raising 6 children in the midst of a rubber estate carved out of a tropical rainforest. She eventually returned to India for better educational opportunities for her children and supervision of the family properties, taking on tasks traditionally expected of only the men.
A very committed Christian all her life, she taught Sunday School from a very young age. It is said that she carried on her classes under a shade tree when her church was closed for a time because of a legal dispute. While in Malaysia she even tried to learn Cantonese to be able to teach the children of the Chinese laborers.
She was a superb cook and an extremely skilled tailor, embroidering household furnishings as well as children's dresses. She loved to sing and it seemed as though she had memorized the entire hymnal.
She taught her children and her grandchildren by her example to work hard, be single-minded in purpose, embrace education and be good Christians. Although she was rendered immobile by a stroke and was mostly blind, she never complained. She faced her lot with infinite grace and passed on with the Lord's Prayer on her lips.
Her husband Mr. K. E. Mammen preceded her in death as did all her siblings. She is survived her 6 children - Thomas K. Mammen (Mariam) of Greenville, Delaware, Anna Chacko (Alex) of Carrolton, Texas, George Mammen (Annie) of Calicut, India, Mary Kuruvilla (Mathews) of Clifton, Virginia, Bobby Mathews (Nancy) of Newark, Delaware, Susan Mathew (Boby) of Carrolton, Texas, 9 grandchildren -Priya Mammen (Fabio Scarpelli) of Philadelphia, PA, Pradeep Mammen (Mary Kate) of Boston, MA, Jacob Chacko of Cedar Rapids, IA, Sarah Chacko of Carrollton, TX, Tina Panakkal (Rahul) of India, Vijay Kuruvilla, Vivek Kuruvilla of Clifton,VA, Elizabeth Mathew of Carrollton, TX, Eileena Mathews of Newark, DE, 2 great grandchildren - Chacko Scarpelli and Titus Scarpelli of Philadelphia and a large number of nephews and nieces throughout the world.
A funeral service will be held at 9:30 am on Saturday July 20, 2013 at CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington where friends may call Friday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Interment will follow the service in the Lower Brandywine Cemetery.
