Age 85, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on September 13, 2009, at the Wilmington Hospital.
Alfred was born in Landenberg, PA and grew up on a farm. He graduated from Newark High School in 1940 and Goldey Business College in 1942. He started his career with the Pennsylvania Railroad and then served his country in WWII in the U.S. Army Headquarters Command in Austria. His career continued with the DuPont Company until his retirement in 1982. Alfred was active in his church, St. Paul's United Methodist and in his community. He happily volunteered his time to the Claymont Chapter of the AARP and the Delaware Human Services Adopt a Family Program serving on various councils and boards. He was a mentor at Maple Lane Elementary School as a part of their Creative Grand-parenting program. Alfred enjoyed spending time with friends and family, golfing, fishing, traveling and tending to his garden at Bellevue State Park.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Doris P. Patterson; his daughters, Judith Yolles and Pamela Wroten of Virginia and Deborah Demeter of Wilmington, DE; grandchildren, Elise and Emily Wroten, Julia and Kyle Yolles and Meagan Demeter; son-in-laws, Herbert Yolles, James Wroten and Bruce Demeter.
A service will be held on Saturday, September 19, at 2:30 pm, at St. Paul's UM Church 1314 Foulk Road, Wilm., DE 19803 where friends may call after 1:30 pm. Burial with military honors will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Paul's UM Church Missions Fund.
