AGE: 98 • Wilmington

Alice M. Betley, born December 22, 1916, died September 12, 2015 in Wilmington, Delaware. She was the daughter of the late Mary and Edmond Ryan, and the wife of the late John F. Betley, who died in 1982.

Alice was a graduate of Wilmington High School and after graduation was happily employed by Wiltex, a Wilmington clothing manufacturer. During World War II, she worked inspecting airplanes for Bellanca Aircraft. In 1943, she married John F. Betley and together they raised ten children.

Alice devoted many happy hours to volunteer work at St. Elizabeth Parish, and was especially proud of her service to the food outreach program and the Christmas giving tree. She greatly enjoyed her time with her fellow volunteer friends at St. E's. She also enjoyed cooking for her large family and providing an "after-school home" for many of her grandchildren.

Alice is survived by her children, Marie Seymore, James and MaryJean Betley, Jean Betley, Thomas and Io Betley, Kathleen Elliot, William and Sandy Betley, Joseph and Regina Betley, Lydia Betley, Margaret Betley and Greg Weber; and her Godchild, Sister AnnMarie Slavin, OSF. She is also survived by her seventeen grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Alice was predeceased by her children, John Betley, Jr., Joan Williamson and Francis Betley; her son-in-law, Joel Elliot; her two grandchildren, Timothy Williamson and Valentin "Butch" Rocca; her sister, Eleanor Slavin; and her brothers, Raymond Ryan and Edward Ryan.

Alice was loved greatly and will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know her.

The family expresses its gratitude to the staff and aides at The Lorelton, Vitas Hospice and Dr. Stephanie Malleus and staff.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Elizabeth Church, Cedar and Clayton Streets, Wilmington on Friday, September 18 at 10:30AM. Interment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Alice may be made to the Outreach Program at St. Elizabeth Parish, 809 S. Broom Street, Wilmington, DE 19805.
