Amerigo Joseph "A.J." Coccia, of Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 17, 2016 at Christiana Hospital. A dedicated, loving husband, father and grandfather, A.J. is widower of Sally Bambacus Coccia, his wife of 47 years, and is survived by his two daughters, Elaine and her husband, Peter Soltani, Ph.D. of West Chester, PA and Mariane and her husband, John Stefano, M.D. of Chadds Ford, PA; a son, Paul of West Palm Beach, FL; and five grandchildren, Brian; Catherine; Lauren; Megan; and Christopher. A.J. was a loyal friend who was known as a caring, good-humored, and kind companion. He touched the lives of many and was loved by all.

A.J. was born in 1918 in New Castle, Delaware and graduated from St. Peter's Elementary and High School. He joined the Delaware National Guard in 1936 and was inducted into Federal Service in September 1940. During World War II, he attained the rank of Captain in the Army Transportation Corps, serving in England and France. A.J. was honorably separated from the Army in January 1946, and joined the Air Force Reserves, where he served as Assistant Club Officer at New Castle Air Force Base. In 1979, he was awarded the Delaware National Guard Conspicuous Service Cross for outstanding service.

A.J. attended Lewis Hotel Training School in Washington, D.C. and with his brother, Jimmy, opened an Italian restaurant in New Castle called the Pompeii, which was one of the first local restaurants to serve traditional hand-made Italian pastas. After selling the family business, A.J. joined the DuPont Country Club as Dining Service Manager. He retired in 1985 and enjoyed spending time with family and friends, reading, and cooking, right up to his final days.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1715 W. 9th St., Wilmington, Delaware. Interment will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Seasons Hospice Foundation, 6400 Shafer Ct. Suite 700, Rosemont, IL 60018; or ALS Assoc., Greater Phila. Chapter, 321 Norristown Road, Suite 260, Ambler, PA 19002.
