Angeline Ann Pala Obituary
Angeline Ann Pala

AGE: 88 • Wilmington

On Tuesday, Angeline A. Pala, 88, died as she lived: peacefully, gently and surrounded by family.

Angie was a generous woman with a smile for all who came her way. Once, a stranger came to the door saying his car broke down as he was driving his sick son to a nearby emergency room. She handed him the keys to her brand new green station wagon. He returned the car hours later. His son survived.

To her seven children, she imparted a deep love of learning and reading; she would walk us like ducklings in a row to the old Woodlawn Library where we borrowed books we came to treasure. Her husband Joe loved to joke about her cooking, saying she should have borrowed a few cook books. But her spaghetti sauce and vegetable soup are legendary. Their song was "All or Nothing at All." Their love was definitely All.

In middle age, she became an activist for the mentally ill and their families. Her son Joseph, who died in 2005, had a break down after service during the Vietnam War. It spurred her to become a founding member of the Delaware Chapter of NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, where she volunteered for more than 30 years; doing everything from stuffing envelopes to establishing half way houses. But her most rewarding work was fielding emergency calls from families in crisis. She gave them her home number and took calls at all hours; calming, soothing and guiding them through the difficult decisions ahead.

One of her favorite organizations was the St. Francis Hospital gift shop where she volunteered for nearly 40 years. She loved to crochet baby blankets that were supposed to be sold at the shop. But she never sold any. Instead, she would secretly reach under the counter and give the blankets away to first time fathers in a quandary over what to buy. Their smiles of relief gave her joy.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Joseph E. Pala; her daughter Marge Pala; son Ernest Pala; her daughters Nina Pala and husband Jeffrey Tigani, Carol Ann Pala and husband Peter McLean, Mary Beth Pala and husband Scott Shearer; son Stephen Pala and wife Patti, as well as nearly a dozen grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Theresa Angeline and brother Harvey Petrucci.
