Died Thursday morning, November 10, 2005.
She was born on March 15, 1915, in Chadds Ford, PA, to Newell Convers (N.C.) and Carolyn Brenneman Bockius Wyeth. Her father, the famous artist and illustrator, moved to the area in 1902 to study with illustrator Howard Pyle. N.C. Wyeth built his studio and home in Chadds Ford where all of his 5 children were born and raised. Mrs. McCoy's older brother, Nathaniel, was an engineer for the DuPont Company, her sisters, Henriette (Mrs. Peter Hurd) and Carolyn, were painters and her younger brother, Andrew, is a world-famous artist. Although her father gave her painting lessons as a child, her greatest personal interest was in music. She studied piano with William Hatton Greene and composition with Harl McDonald. She was composing and painting right up until her death. In 1934, when Mrs. McCoy was only 19 years old, one of her compositions was performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra with Leopold Stokowski conducting. Other compositions have been performed by the Kennett Symphony, the Germantown Symphony, the Main Line Symphony, by organists at Longwood Gardens and in regional churches. Many of her works have been written in honor or memory of relatives and friends. In 1935, she married John W. McCoy II, a well-known artist and a former student of N.C. Wyeth who taught watercolor painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Together, they made their home in Chadds Ford and raised 3 children, John Denys McCoy of Nogal, NM, Anna Brelsford McCoy, also of Chadds Ford, PA and Maude Robin McCoy of West Chester, PA. Ann McCoy was famous for her love of antique dolls that she gathered over her lifetime. They have been exhibited often at the Brandywine River Museum. All her life she painted, primarily works in watercolor. One of her early paintings is in the collection of the Hotel du Pont, and her work has been exhibited in numerous locations including the Chadds Ford Gallery, the Somerville-Manning Gallery and the Brandywine River Museum.
In addition to her son and daughters, Mrs. McCoy is survived by 4 grandchildren, McCoy Weymouth, Joel Nields, J.W. McCoy and Sanna Lylel; and 2 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 pm on Thursday, November 17, at the Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church, 101 Old Kennett Road, Wilmington, DE 19807. Burial will be private.
Instead of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to the Brandywine River Museum, PO Box 141, Chadds Ford, PA 19317.
