Ann Schell Dowling

AGE: 88 •

Ann Schell Dowling, 88, passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, September 6, 2015, in her son's home in Powder Springs, Georgia, surrounded by her loving family. Ann was born on December 13, 1926 in Wilmington, Delaware to Charles and Thelma Schell. She graduated from Wilmington High School in 1944 and from Franklin School of Science and Arts in 1945. On April 12, 1947, Ann was married to Russell Joseph Dowling, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Ann worked as the Pulmonary Function Supervisor at the Wilmington Medical Center for 15 years and retired in 1985. Upon retiring, Ann and Russell moved to Estero, FL, where they resided for 19 years before moving to Georgia to live with their son and daughter-in-law. Ann was an avid fan of boating, bridge, mahjong, and mystery novels. She was an expert quilter, and she also loved to knit. She quilted more than 500 lap quilts and donated them to a local dialysis unit through the Senior Center at West Cobb where she was also a member of the "Knit Wits". She used mostly Debbie Mumm material in her quilts and was surprised to receive a note of thanks from Debbie herself. She also knit more than 100 caps for the neonatal unit at Floyd Hospital. After the death of her husband in 2008, Ann moved into The Heritage of Brookstone in Kennesaw, Georgia, where she continued to quilt and to read voraciously.

Ann is survived by her three children: Kathy Pulcher (Jeffrey Stewart) of West Chester, PA, Richard (Shauna) Dowling of Powder Springs, GA, and Christine (John) McGinn of Juno Beach, FL. She is also survived by 2 grandchildren: Matthew McGinn of West Chester, PA, and Kirsta (James) Armor of Kennesaw, GA, and 2 great-grandchildren: Haley Elise Armor and Sydney Emma Armor, both of Kennesaw, GA. She is predeceased by Russell Dowling, her loving husband of 61 years.

A small service will be held for the family.
