Anthony Murowany, Jr.

AGE: 91 • Greenville

Anthony Murowany, Jr., contractor, musician of Greenville, DE, peacefully passed away November 15, 2016 after a prolonged 35 year battle with cancer. Anthony was born in 1925 in Renovo, Pennsylvania to Anthony Sr. and Anastasia (Homena). The family moved to Millville, NJ, when Anthony Jr. was very young. During high school, Tony excelled in several sports, especially track and field. Still as a teenager, he volunteered for military service, and joined the Merchant Marines.-WW2. While in the Merchant Marines, Anthony served as the communications officer, and was severely injured while helping save his ship, during a storm in the Atlantic. His military service also included the navy and later the army.

Anthony was a proud union member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW 351) for over 68 years. He was a certified Master Electrician and was talented in many other aspects of the construction trade which he applied during his career. After working for several electrical contractors, Anthony decided to start his own business, and in the late 1960's, founded Murowany Electric. Murowany Electric was one of the largest union electrical contractors in the area. The business focused on the commercial and the industrial sectors. Some of the noted local projects were Luther Towers, I and II, the William McLaughlin Public Safety Building, ICI (Astra Zeneca), Delaware City (Getty) and the Christiana Mall.

Upon retirement from his business, Anthony applied his labor background and management knowledge to serve on Delaware's Industrial Accident Board. He remained thankful to Governor Minner for affording him the opportunity to serve this post.

An accomplished accordionist, from an early age until he could no longer hold an accordion, Anthony was performer and composer. He was best remembered for a five member country/western band that starred on a weekly WSNJ radio program (Bridgeton N.J.)

He will be greatly missed for his profound character, generosity and sense of humor.

In a great sorrow he leaves his wife of 65 years Maria, son - Mark A. and Rose Murowany (Wilmington), daughter - Christine (Dallas) and Tim Hidell - 4 grandsons,- Timothy (Ashlee), Anthony (Jessica),Nicholas and Arthur and 4 great grandchildren. He also leaves behind relatives on several continents.

There will be a viewing on Friday, November 18, from 7pm-8pm, at McCrery and Harra Funeral Homes, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE, with Parastas to follow at 8pm.

Internment will at SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Millville, NJ at 11AM on Saturday, November 19.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to, United Ukrainian Relief Committee- or the Delaware Humane Association
