Anthony "Tony" Wong Obituary
Anthony "Tony" Wong

Wilmington - Anthony "Tony" Wong passed away peacefully in his home on November 28, 2017, with the love of his life, Mary Kennedy Wong, and other members of his family by his side.

Tony was born in Jericho, Jamaica, West Indies on July 21, 1943. The oldest of eight children, he grew up working in his family-owned bakery, where he developed a lifelong love of cooking.

He studied at Tri-State University in Indiana, Widener University, and the University of Delaware. It was on a visit back home to Jamaica that he met his bride and best friend, Mary Louise Kennedy. They wed after a brief engagement and started their amazing journey together.

Mary and Tony moved to Wilmington, Delaware from Kingston, Jamaica in 1967, when Tony took a job teaching Mathematics at St. Edmond's Academy. Tony taught and coached soccer there before moving to Loyola High School in Baltimore; and then Cecil Community College, where he taught until his retirement in 2011.

These are the details of Tony's life, but his story is much bigger. He was the most positive, outgoing and gregarious man around, and was truly loved by all. Tony made friends easily and "collected" new members of his family wherever he went. He was an avid sports fan, loved riding his bike, was quick with a smile and a light-hearted joke, but most of all, he enjoyed feeding people. Mary and Tony's house became the epicenter for home-cooked, Jamaican-inspired food, extended family and great conversations.

He spent his life serving the public as an educator and member of the Cecil County School Board and the National School Board Association. Privately, he was a husband, father, and grandfather who gave of himself completely, and always encouraged his family to be their very best.

He is survived by Mary, his wife of more than 52 years; his children and their spouses: Brian and Lynn, Ruth and Troy, Grace and Ted; and his grandchildren: Taylor, Lindsay, Lexie, Kennedy, Jack, Sarah, Emily, Christopher, Michael and Mia. He will also be sorely missed by many, many others who called him friend, family or just Gungi.

Services will be held Saturday, December 2, 2017at 10 am at The Rollins Center, St. Edmond's Academy, 2120 Veale Road, Wilmington, DE 19810.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in memory of Anthony Wong to St. Edmond's Academy ( or Jamaica Mitchell Medical Missions (
