Arnold R. Olsen Obituary
Arnold R. Olsen

On October 29, 2015, Arnold R. Olsen, a very smart, strong, witty, at times stubborn and always dependable man realized we all must leave this world as we know it. He fought a long battle with dementia and his defeat of near death over the past 3 years is something that only a true Norwegian would have the strength and courage to do, which is how he recently earned the nickname "Our Fighting Viking", now it's come time for an official good-bye and remembrance of the man so many loved. Arnie was born on July 14, 1935 to Arnold and Mable Olsen in Brooklyn, New York. In his teens, the family, which now included his younger brother Robert visited Georgetown, Delaware, where his parents fell in love with the area and bought a small farm. After graduating from Georgetown High School in 1953, Arnie continued his education at Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, Delaware, where he met his wife, Nancy Olsen Landskroener, with whom he had three beloved daughters: Kris, Kathy and Cindy. He raised his family in Fox Hall, where he and his daughters could often be found at Maple Dale Country Club playing golf or swimming with friends and family. We couldn't have asked for a better father; always supportive, instilled the value of a dollar and was definitely the "go to" person when any serious issue arrived. When giving advice, we always thought about the words he used. If you didn't like what he had to say, you were reminded that "if you want fair, go to Harrington". He started his insurance career with State Farm and later moved to the State of Delaware where he retired as the Director of Insurance Coverage. Early in his career, he served in the Army. And later, he shared his knowledge of the insurance industry teaching night school at Delaware Technical Community College. He also enjoyed painting occasionally in his early working years.

Arnold was someone everyone looked up to and respected. He was always there to help and offer his wisdom to those who needed him. He taught his children and grandchildren to work hard, but to not forget how to enjoy life. He was preceded in death by his parents Arnold and Mabel Olsen and his brother Robert Olsen. He married Mildred Caldwell and the two of them shared an active life after retirement, spending time with family, attending University of Delaware football games, traveling, golf and skiing. They moved to Venice, Florida in 2004 until he returned to Delaware in 2013. Typically on a nice day, Arnold could be found on a golf course, playing cards or socializing with family and friends. If he wasn't out enjoying golf, you could find him following the ups and downs of the stock market, or watching golf, football, or NASCAR. He was a long time member of Maple Dale Country Club and the Del Vets in Dover. Arnold was a loving husband, father, grand-father and great-grandfather "Grandpa-pa".

He is survived by his wife Mildred Caldwell; three daughters: Kristina Olsen and her husband David Seager, Katherine Olsen, and Cynthia Yencer; two step-daughters, Laura Biddle and her husband Mark and Catherine Sim and her partner Theresa Coburn; two step-brothers, Kenneth Caldwell and his wife Lisa and David Caldwell and his wife Hope; grandchildren: Brandon Yencer and his wife Amy, Dustin Yencer and his fiancé Katherine Cessna, Samantha, Jonathan, and Jessica Seager; four step-grandchildren: Elizabeth Caldwell-Colona and her husband Matt, Chad Caldwell, Shannon Biddle, Erin Biddle and one step great granddaughter Maeva Colona.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life which will be held at 2:00 P.M on Friday, November 27, 2015 at Maple Dale Country Club, 180 Mapledale Road, Dover, DE 19904. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the , www.alz.org/delval. Online condolences may be made via www.pippinfuneralhome.com.
