Arthur Francis Martin age 94 of Cokesbury Village, Hockessin DE, died on December 26, 2012.

Son of the late Arthur Flowers Martin and Elizabeth Bridgeford Lawson, he was born in Elkins WV in 1918. He graduated from Elkins High School and Ursinus College as class valedictorian, and received his doctorate in chemistry from MIT. He also received an Honorary Doctorate of Science from Ursinus College.

He spent his career with Hercules developing a reputation as a cellulose chemist. He studied atomic energy while on loan to Argonne National Laboratory and helped introduce Hercules to scientific computation. He ended his work there as a financial analyst, advising on the economic potential of construction projects.

He was elected president of the Hercules Men's Club, was a member of the Board of Directors of the Hercules Country Club, serving as chair of the Grounds Committee, and was on the governing committee of the Hercules Retirees of the Wilmington Area.

Arthur was the first president of the Canterbury Hills Civic Association residing there for 37 years, and was founding president of the Hockessin Area Chapter of the AARP. He served the Hockessin United Methodist Church as treasurer and financial secretary for over a decade.

A longtime railroad enthusiast, he enjoyed reading, puzzles, music and working on his computer. He was an accomplished genealogist and was an avid golfer, playing into his 80's. He and his wife were breeders of champion Weimaraners, winning the coveted Weimaraner National Futurity in 1979. He was a life member of the Wilmington Kennel Club and the Delaware Valley Weimaraner Club, serving as club treasurer.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Esther Mary Coffin, and his children: Andrea Elizabeth (and son-in-law Doug Albertson) of Avondale PA, David Ross of East Hartford CT and Cynthia Jane of Wilmington DE. He is also survived by stepsister, Douglass Sibbald Dolfie, her children and their families, all of California.

A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at Cokesbury Village on January 12, 2013, at 2pm, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to Ursinus College, Collegeville PA, 19426, or the Hockessin United Methodist Church, 7250 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin DE, 19707.
