AGE: 88 • Hockessin

Aubrey J. "A.J." Cox, age 88, of Hockessin, passed away peacefully in his home with his loving family by his side on January 4, 2016. Born in Biggers, AR, he was the son of the late Borden Cox and the late Thelma (Johnson) Cox Hayes. Born and raised in Arkansas, A.J. and his wife, Mae, moved to Delaware in 1959. Soon after, A.J. began his successful automotive business, Cox Auto Sales. Over the years, A.J. was a successful entrepreneur and businessman as he ran his wholesale and retail automotive business, as well as becoming a successful real estate developer. He was the founder of Broadmeadows Nursing Facility in Middletown, DE, and helped develop the Marriot in Kennett Square. A.J. was a longtime member of the Cedars Church of Christ, as well as a lifelong member of the N.R.A. He was a 32nd degree Mason with the Christiana Masonic Lodge #35.

A.J. was a man of many talents. In the 1970's, he was a Nascar Driver of Car #81. He was also an accomplished harmonica and guitar player. In his spare time, A.J. enjoyed following Nascar, especially Richard Petty, as well as watching the Phillies. Family was the most important part of A.J.'s life, from spending the holidays together to making sure they were always taken care of.

A.J. is survived by his beloved wife of 67 1/2 years, Audrey Mae (Baughn) Cox; his sons, Doyle K. Cox (Jamie) of Landenberg, PA and Glenn A. Cox (Virginia) of Cotter, AR; his daughters, Carol A. Stephano of New Castle, DE and Donna K. Brady (Kirk) of Doniphan, MO, as well as 11 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Tillman (Marie) and Harmon Cox and Dorman Hayes; and his sister, Molly Adams (Cas). A. J. was predeceased by his parents, as well as his brother, Herbert Doyle Cox, and his sister, Doris Hubbard.

A viewing will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2016, from 11 AM to 1 PM at Cedars Church of Christ, 511 Greenbank Rd., Wilmington, DE, where a Celebration of Life for A.J. will begin at 1 PM. Interment will be held at a later date in Arkansas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cedars Church of Christ, 511 Greenbank Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808.
