Augustine M. Fortunato Jr. Obituary
Augustine M. Fortunato, Jr.

AGE: 94 •

Augustine "Augie" M. Fortunato, Jr., age 94, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.

Augie was born to the late Agostino and Rose (Raniere) Fortunato, on July 23, 1922 in their family home on W. Fourth St, which was built by his father. The year after graduating from Wilmington High School in 1942, Augie joined the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country for four years, four months and four days. He served as a pharmacist's mate on the USS Maui

(ARG-8) in the South Pacific, and described his Naval career as a "vacation with pay."

Upon returning from the Navy, Augie married his childhood friend and high school sweetheart, Marie Fidance, on April 28, 1947. Augie and his brothers worked under their father for the renowned A. Fortunato & Sons

contracting firm. He later ran the company, known for developing beautiful custom homes and housing developments in the Wilmington area. A. Fortunato & Sons was one of the trusted contractors for the du Pont estates, DuPont Company and the University of Delaware. The company also built several hangars for Atlantic Aviation, which were innovative for the time.

He dedicated his time and skills to the St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church and St. Mary Magdalen Church. Augie's proudest achievement was being a father and a grandfather. Augie and Marie never missed a Grandparents' Day at Tower Hill School, or a sporting event. After his retirement, he and Marie enjoyed many winters in Naples, Fl., with their extended family and friends. His faith, loyalty, gentle kindness, generosity and his famous pizzelles and roasted peppers will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 70 years, Marie; his daughter Linda and her husband Patrick Gamble, his granddaughters Ann Marie Gamble (Tim Buckelew) and Kathlyn Gamble (Casey Rivers); his sister Ann DiSabatino and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Dr. Stephen Fortunato, Joseph Fortunato, Alfonso Gallo, and Anthony J. Fortunato; and sisters Rose Fortunato and Mildred Poppiti.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Anthony of Padua Church on Saturday, March 25,

2017 at 12 noon. Internment will be held privately at a later date. Visitation will be held at St.

Anthony's on Saturday morning from 10 - 11:45 am.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent in Augie's memory to The Little Sisters of the Poor, 185 Salem Church Rd., Newark, DE 19713 or Compassionate Care Hospice Foundation, Inc., 248 E. Chestnut Hill Rd., Ste. 4, Newark, DE 19713.
